Woods. Contender or making up the numbers

Jimmy Walker is a relatively long hitter, but not one of the real bombers.

Just looked him up - 17th on the PGA tour in driving distance with 301 yards average.

Tiger has an average of 323 this year so far (according to here: http://www.pgatour.com/players/player.08793.tiger-woods.html/statistics not a large sample data though) though so he can throttle back and still comfortably keep up. Even if Tigers average was 300, he doesnt need to welly the driver every hole anyway.

I still worry about the driver (and his back) and there are some places at Augusta you can't be out of position or Raes Creek will be waiting or it'll leave a tough shot in with postage stamp landing areas (smaller than playing off the short stuff for sure)

Why the hell was tiger trying to fade/cut/slice everything?

Some of those holes demand a draw, but tiger was aiming way left, and ending up way right - it just seemed wrong!

his short game was top class though I thought.....

Looks to me like he simply can't trust his swing to produce a controlled draw and a poor fade is usually less destructive than a poor draw

I'd say it was a fair performance from him yesterday, I don't think he can be classed as a contender though, Well not this morning anyway.

Agree with this, thought it was a decent performance for his most recent return to the game, when I watched him limp off at Torrey Pines I thought we'd seen the end of him, given a couple more tournaments this year he might not be too far from competitive!

The good news is that his back looked fine and short game was superb. Driving is clearly the issue as called by Homer before the start. If he can get more in the fairway he could be looking at too ten, but could easily shoot 75 with the way it is now.

Overall a good comeback considering he's only played one 72 hole comp in the last 12 months, bodes well for the future

a decent showing bearing in mind the troubles he has gone through. Hopefully a good round today. It would be lovely to see him complete 4 rounds no matter where he finishes

He actually hit more fairways than the field average, the wide ones were well wide though, very destructive.
His approach play wasn't very good.
Excellent short game.

Not a bad showing overall, given where he was a few weeks ago.

I didn't realise he'd played quite so little tournament golf (some of the missing days self inflicted at the weekend right enough!!).

Pretty impressive taking that into account. Think he's teeing off early today so won't be as much of him on the coverage to the delight of many!

He reminds me of myself. wild tee shot, poor approach, decent chip, average putt and just about making buffer with a lot of huffing and puffing.

When he did hit some cracking tee shots the second shot was poor - when he needed to scramble he did that very well - pitch on 11 was excellent facing the water.

Said in the interview struggled with the pace - seemed to leave a lot short and on the low side

All in all I think that was a good performance by Woods. Still a long way from his best but not a destructive opening round by a long way

Agreed. Some of the shots he hit were Tiger of old. The shot out of the trees at 7 was phenomenal and the two chips at 11 and 12 were high quality.

His bad ones were pretty wild, though, and he can't rely on his putting like he used to.

Still, great to see hitting good shots and not limping around. Hope he makes the cut at least.

so do I

Hopefully he makes the cut. The more golf he gets in and manages to stay fit and healthy the better.

He's not going to win, never was.

Do we think Tiger will play Seniors events when he reaches the required age?

I just had a look and saw that Nicklaus also won 8 Senior Majors.
