Women playing with men

And finally, if you want some light reading, this is it:

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32004L0113:EN:HTML

Key bits:

(4) Equality between men and women is a fundamental principle of the European Union. Articles 21 and 23 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union prohibit any discrimination on grounds of sex and require equality between men and women to be ensured in all areas.

(17) The principle of equal treatment in the access to goods and services does not require that facilities should always be provided to men and women on a shared basis, as long as they are not provided more favourably to members of one sex.

>> This was the bit that got golf clubs up-in-arms last year because it suggested you can't have women's-only tee-times.

(16) Differences in treatment may be accepted only if they are justified by a legitimate aim. A legitimate aim may, for example, be the protection of victims of sex-related violence (in cases such as the establishment of single-sex shelters), reasons of privacy and decency (in cases such as the provision of accommodation by a person in a part of that person's home), the promotion of gender equality or of the interests of men or women (for example single-sex voluntary bodies), the freedom of association (in cases of membership of single-sex private clubs), and the organisation of sporting activities (for example single-sex sports events). Any limitation should nevertheless be appropriate and necessary in accordance with the criteria derived from case law of the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

>> The issue of 'single-sex sporting events' isn't the issue I'm referring to. Here, it's a caveat to ensure that the 100m final of the Olympics doesn't have to be a mixed gender event.

I believe some historical context is required here.

One must remember why this legislation was required in the first place. On the whole, females were not allowed to be full members of a mixed-gender golf club and this is why they paid a reduced subscription. However, although this legislation should, in theory, accord female members with the same privileges as male members, it has been my experience that practice has not matched theory. If you were to read my club's fixture list, 'before and after', so to speak, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's business as usual because the majority of the female m'ship are in their 50's and 60's and don't want to play at weekends so the male majority are quite happy to turn an expedient blind eye as it leaves them in sole possession of weekends for their comps.

It is these older women who will ensure the number of females staying in golf will remain at its current low level.

As for the men playing with the women thingy, this is not an issue for me. It's more important to provide equal opportunties for equal pay.

Totally agree. But regarding men playing with women, if there are only ten female members (as per the OP's club) it isn't viable to suggest they should only play amongst themselves. There is no prospect of equity if you have nobody to play with.

@ Fairway Dodger ...

You're absolutely correct of course. In an effort (and it was an effort!) to appear to be more equal, during the course of the last decade, my club (equal status since 1975 btw!) allowed its female members to enter the Saturday (monthly medal) and (fortnightly) Sunday stablefords. Males and females can play together but in their own comps (as it should be). Unfortunately, it also decided to retain the women's entire midweek fixture list of drawn and non-drawn comps as well. Not so equal then!

It just seems to me that we have to get away from the idea that it's only men who now earn a living and begin to cultivate a culture whereby weekends can be shared between men's and women's comps being careful, of course, to retain a midweek option. Associate m'ship practices have had a devastating effect on the development of the women's game. I want to see that change and do you know what, we don't have to play with the men to do that. What the women's game needs is greater weekend access to its drawn events. Start ridding the game of this very specific prejudice first and we might begin see more girls staying in golf.

Well drawboy!!!!

Move from one forum to another one to discuss this, I actually like this topic!

I play in the "Clique" which drawboy is talking about who yes had a man and wife join us, Bert and Gert more like Brian and Linda? Come on mate your starting to let yourself down, luckily I know you and know your not what some of the people have said however if I didn't know you it would probably come across as they stated. Linda actually plays off 16 and is very long off the tee, she does not hold up the play and plays very good golf again I do not what your issue is.

my issues again

Did you tell Linda about the Yorkshire Golf forum? Perhaps she might want to go on the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] YG forum day. Who organises that again?

How many women do you think the forum will get after drawboys (admin) post?
I'm sure, as you imply, he's a lovely bloke..............unless you are a woman.

It's all the same thing, just called lots of different names.

Roll up, swindle, knock up, fiddle, greedy and probably more.

A non official comp that members organise usually the same time each week and just put a couple of quid in each for prizes.
