Wokefield Park fire

Doesn't look good at all - played there about 6 years ago - not a bad course , the hotel looked very nice

I played in a charity event recently at Sherfield and I met a bunch of golfers from Wokefield there.

They gave it a glowing report and its another course on my radar for joining next year. I hope not too much damage has been done. I have played the course before but it was a while ago and I can scarcely remember it. Will give it a try.

As we speak there is a major fire at the Berkshire Wokefield hotel, as reported by BBC news. states there is a 18 hole championship course within the De vere owned site.

Re: Wokefield park golf hotel Major fire

My home course. Received an email saying the course was closed until further notice, which I thought was odd and then saw the BBC report. Looks like its the modern building that is affected and the old part is untouched. Hopefully get a chance to see this weekend, although I have no idea if our weekend medal will go ahead or not!

Twelve appliances in attendance at its height with water being taken from the lakes on the golf course. Not good and a few Mortimer (where it's located) had ringside seats last night. Hope the golf complex isn't too bad. Decent course if a little boggy in winter.

Played there last year and the greens weren't in great shape, but had plenty of golf weekends there in the hotel, lovely place, spent one or two New Years there too. Shame that it's happened so close to Christmas, I bet they will have to cancel a few events there. Fingers crossed it will all be back up and running ASAP!

The greens have been a shambles this year, but they are trying their best to sort them

I played there one weekend and they were no longer grass, they were just sand. They were pretty horrific! Are they any better yet?

The big problem is they are usually far too hard and very little grass on them. Autumn is the best time to play though. Grass has returned, they micro-tinned them to decrease their firmness and purchased one of those irons to reduce the amount they need to be cut and make them truer. They are a LOT better than early in the summer and some are better than others.

Our corporate training centre is based there...we have folks from overseas who have lots their effects including passports! All safe and sound though

When the fire issues are over and the course back open then I may book a round there!
