What does everyone do over the winter? Do you just put the clubs away till spring or play on?
What's your course like in winter, a muddy bog or still in good condition!

I live in Inverness and play at Tain in the winter, course is usually in good nick unless there's frost. A few different tees but the normal greens most of the time.

Play on through the winter there are plenty competitions at our course and it is usually in good nick, we are on full greens with winter tees.

Is tain good in the winter and what are the rates??

Play throughout the winter. Usually go on winter tees when the frost get here around christmas time untill late march. If there is a heavy frost we go on temp greens.
The John O`Gaunt course is not too bad in winter although if it`s very wet the holes down the bottom of the course around the stream (4,5,11,12,13,) which have peaty soil can get heavy.
The Carthagena on the other hand can be played all year round as it is built on sand. Even after a heavy downpour your shoes are the same as if you`ve played in the summer. The only time it`s shut is when it snows.
We have some winter comps, The Commitee Cup which is forsomes knockout, and winter league every three weeks.

Play on if the course is open.

Thankfully over in Dublin we dont generally get the snow or frost other areas get, being close to the coast helps.

I've just joined a new club last week, i've heard it remains playable throughout the winter so im hoping to get at least a game a week if weather permits. Im also hoping to get some lessons in preparation for playing competitions again next year. I haven't played a competition since I was about 13 (10 years ago) so im already awaiting it nervously

Play on in the winter ,we have a winter stableford for weekly and monthly prizes and we have an eclectic amonst ourselves.
We play full course no mats,or winter greens, 4 holes have astroturf mats embedded into the ground which makes the holes longer as there at the back of tees, the quality ones not the brick hard ones.Anyone fancy it give me a shout its £14.

Play in all comps throughout the Winter in all weathers, and also in roll-ups with mates when there is no comp. The roll-ups are only binned if it is persisting down very heavily. If we don't play golf, what's the alternative?

Play the competitions (one medal and stableford per month) and use the time to work on my swing. I usually end up playing with my mates on a Saturday for a few quid and then go to the range on the Sunday and work on the multitude of faults from the day before.

I'm on a long and dark road to try and change my swing tempo completely which is proving to be a far easier task in concept than practice. When it works I really see the benefit in terms of proper clubhead speed and am hitting 7 irons over 150 yards even in the colder air and wet practice ground which is a revelation. When it goes wrong though its a disaster with everything out of synch and it could go 45 degrees left or on a big arcing slice right. Only about 100 yards dispersal at the moment so not much to work on!

I love winter golf - its cheaper (for a nomad such as myself) and generally quieter, even if the daylight hours are shorter.

If you get a nice clear day, I seem to appreciate it a bit more than the summer when it is (half) expected.

Also, it gives an opportunity to spend money on new waterproofs and jumpers!!

I will play once a week however, I will not play the comp if we are on winter greens, there is no point as you may as well put 0.1 onto your Hcap every time.

I hate winter golf!!!
I can't get my head around hitting off of crappy mats or uneven patches of grass serving as winter tees, and trying to chip/putt across a closly mown area into a sunken bucket.....rubbish!!!

Winter is time to book up the pro and hit the practice ground hard!!!...no more comps now till the March Medal.

I do chuckle to myself on a cold rain lashed sunday morning thinking of my pals struggling around in the winter league.....suckers!!!!!

Hitting off crappy mats on the range is okay then??

Play right the way through as much as I can, gotta keep my arm turning over and with winter league golf being "less serious" the banter is always good too.

I don't do that either!!!.....i go on one of our clubs practice grounds and happily hit balls until dark or the weather gets too nasty. ;)

Usually superb, sometimes if you get frost not worth bothering as the ball can go anywhere. On some of the holes they have different tees but still grass and one uses a different hole. It can be very sheltered weather wise too I’ve played in December in short sleeves before. Can get windy.

Cost wise in winter I think its only £10 and £6 for guests,

If you are ever up here give me a shout I’ll get you on.
