Hi HTL,
i recently joined Kingswood.
In the main i use the clubs Range but i was looking on the net and came across a range at New Malden which is the one i mentioned with heated bays. Might go tomorrow as i am working (allegedly) today. The other thing that looks good about it is it is open till 10.30 pm. most nights.

During the week i try to go lunchtimes to the Hoebridge range in Woking. Trouble is i am staring to really feel the cold these days.

Just got back from an 8am tee off. Never played in frozen conditions before and didn't really enjoy it.

Whilst I loved being out I just got fed up of hitting good shots into the green only for them to bounce as if landed on concrete.

Adjusted by trying to drop shots short and run them up, but the bounce was so inconsistent. Some would roll on the green, some would shoot almost sideways, some just stopped dead.

It just became a complete lottery.

Putting was a nightmare too, frozen worm mounds anyone ? Ball moving like I was playing in a pin ball machine. Well, not quite that bad, but you get the idea :D

I'm supposed to be going out on Friday morning again. I really want to play just got so frustruated this morning it wasn't an enjoyable experience.

Use the time on the range and wait for the temperatures to rise a bit. I don't mind cold and wet but freezing takes all the skill away and can only put bad feelings in your head.

Got back an hour ago after being delayed 1hr 30mins waiting for the fog to clear.

Only played 9 holes as it was like playing on concrete but it was still good to get out there and have banter with the lads and practice shaping shots off the tee.

-3deg when i got back in the car. Still 2mile walk and fresh air in the lungs cant be bad for you surely.

Sat in front of a roaring fire with a cup of tea, choccy digestives and about to watch a good film. Life's gooooooood!

When I lived in Scotland I used to adore early morning rounds, few on the course, often the first person to leave footprints in the dew, watch the colours change as the day rolls on,spot the wildlife not yet disturbed by the many, I miss that sort of thing.

We have been on temps for weeks, at the merest hint of frost, off we come for the whole day. Going to be temps for the next 3 weeks minimum. Really can't see the point in playing. Silly, as I am still off til the 5th, so not sure what else I will be doing. Been so bored recently I have been working in my own time.

That's really bad Murph. It's bad enough sitting here for 3 days with nothing happening just because "someone" has to be in the office (particualrly as I had cleared everything before Christmas) but working in your own time!!

Re: Winter Golf - an early round offer that I wont take up ....anyone else

Just walking out the door for 18 holes now :)

I've been shooting betweeen 98 - 103 very regularly recently, hitting 92 on a good day. Been reading Golf is not a game of perfect (crimbo prezzie) and decided that if I could pull it all together in the same round I'd set myself a target to break 90 in the coming season.

Shot 89 this morning :D

Could have done a bit better even, but I need to learn to hit my new 3 wood (also crimbo prezzie), cost me 4 shots on one hole

Just drove over the Westwood today to see plenty hardy souls (nutters) attempting to play on rock solid fairways and greens. Not for me there are plenty of perfect golfing days out of the 365 to take advantage of so why punish yourself?

I love playing early in the morning during the Summer when there is a little bit of dew on the fairways, not enough to affect the roll of the ball but just enough to keep your ball clean. I love playing with nice clean balls.

During the summer, yes early morning golf is ace but in winter, whats the point? You cant chip or play onto greens, putting is just guess work, you slip about, cant take proper divots without straining your wrists, what is the point.

Played once early this winter and won't be doing so again. It reeked havoc with my game and whilst I wasn't cold it just wasn't good fun seeing well struck shots come to nothing. I hit a skycaddie confirmed 289 yard drive though after a 'healthy kick' down the fairway. This won't be enough to tempt me out again before the frost begins to thaw- I would much rather go to the range. Also i didn't even bother putting as it would only get me into bad habits / cause problems with my pace when the greens are normal.

morning golf in the summer- that is completely different!

Love it!
It all adds to the challenge. If you pitch up to the pin and it runs through, adapt, hit it short and let it run.

It makes putting a lottery, so what, don't take it too serious.

It blows the cobwebs away and 3 hours out on the course on a "fresh" winters morning beats 5 minutes in the office any day of the week.

See post last game of 2008 for my thoughts on Winter golf!
