Ok, a bunch are playing at 8.30am, and much as at this point I would like to play, I know that, come 8am,.....

1. I'll still feel like s**t as I dont start well in the morning, despite walking the dog at 7.30am.
2. I still wont feel like communicating with anyone in a remotely civilised fashion until perhaps the 5th, so the Dog is ideal company.
3. The ground tomorrow will still be completely white over and rock hard most of the round loooking at the forecast, making shot making a lottery, particularly as I'll be wearing 3 layers, a hat, and gloves between shots.
4. A 'tweaked' back is all too easy in those conditions, something I can do without thanks.
5. The customary couple of beers after with the fellas will, as soon as I get home, make me fall asleep as soon as I sit down, possibly resulting in HID getting all arsey with me before we head out for New Years Eve....

....so I think I wont bother, and perhaps, if its dry and reasonable after 12pm, I may venture out for a few holes or onto the practise ground for an hour.

It may not be as 'sociable', but very probably better for my game, so the decision is made.

Anyone else feel the same about early morning winter golf ??

:-/

I only feel crappy in the morning because of my MS, if not for that I used to love getting out there in the AM, its not my will its something else.

We normally go out about 8-8.30 socially at weekends and I tend to find I start poorly because at this time of year I don't get a chance to hit some balls and warm up. If I am playing a competition I opt for one of the later starting times to give the greens a chance to thaw (fat chance tomorrow) and to get to the club to warm up and hit balls.

I don't like playing anytime in the mornings in winter as I prefer the warmth of my duvet and don't like playing to frozen greens where any chance of controlling the ball is gone or to a temporary green that makes the hole 50 yards shorter. To be honest I'd rather get up leisurely and go to my local range with the heated bays and spend several hours working on my game. I think it is time better spent.

I know what you mean Chris.

I was going to have a game tomorrow but its going to be foggy and -4 so bugger that.

Can't really see the point in playing in those sort of conditions anymore.

Plenty of time to sleep when your dead!!!

Get out enjoy the fresh air and escape from work for a few hours if nothing else.

My sentiments exactly.

I have a round booked for 8:12am and as I am now posting this at 6:30am proves that I cant wait for my round to start!!! I even played yesterday afternoon (9 holes) until 4:30pm, it was dark and my bag was icing up but I just cant get enough of this stupid game. :D

In the Spring/Summer I much prefer playing in the morning.
This time of year, on frozen greens?
No thanks

Phew, looks like I'm not alone !! :-)

Roll on spring........or at least a nice afternoon :-)

Played on Sunday morning. Every green frozen. What finally made my mind up to walk off was hitting a nice wedge into a par 4, perfect strike (for a change) and the ball landed about 3 feet from the pin, bounced about twenty feet up in the air and ended up in a gorse bush behind the green.
After hitting two good shots I couldn't be arse carrying on to card an 8

Nope, its the best time of the day.

1 - The course is empty, so its Kings golfing
2 - The summer or autumn mornings are beautiful
3 - The course has recovered overnight from the previous day
4 - There is no rush
5 - I get home at between 10-11 and have the day with the wife, which keeps her happy.

I have been known to tee off at 0605am on a summer morning, though its usually about 0630ish in the summer and first teeish the rest of the year, if I don't tee early and have to play in the afternoon or late morning I know I will end up in the club house and get home late afternoon when the day is over.

Tried to go out at 8.30 this morning, was -3 and both courses near the in laws had about five 4 balls setting off, playing on frozen greens.

A) Far too cold to be playing at snails pace

B) Frozen greens are pointless to play on, they ruin a round

C) If I dont catch the ball perfect my hands will feel like they have been shot by a sniper

If the ground wasn't frozen I'd be out, but its -4 here and HTL says it all.

Been playing long enough to know that its worth saving for the better weather.

And I love being out at 6 on a spring morning - but not a frozen winter one.

I've been playing over the break, starting at 8am.

Yes, the greens are frozen, but I just love being out on a crisp winter morning. The air is so fresh, nobody on the course, its a real pleasure.

Shot making into the greens is obviously impossible, but I look at it another way. I work to land my shots short of the green and have them roll on. Sometimes its a bit of a lottery as the first bounce can be wild !!

Then a cup of tea and bacon butties in the club house afterwards and home for noon. Lovely.

I am all for a round at the start of a day in Spring, Summer or Autumn and love it when mine are the first footprints along a fairaway and on a green but at this time of year it just seems there are too many negatives to make it a worthwhile effort. I'd rather hit balls constructively and work on my game

Will be out on Friday at 9:00 unless the fog that limited visibility to 20 yards this morning is still over the course. Love early starts as it leaves the afternoon free to gain more brownie points with my (much) better half

I was out yesterday at 8am. Ground was hard and there was little wind so my shots were travelling quite a bit further than usual. Loved it. :D

As tempting as it is to get out on the course, i must admit the lure of a 100 ball bucket at the nearby Range with 'heated'/floodlit bays is more alluring at the moment.
