Winning Open score to raise eyebrows!

You don't have to tell your pro to do it. Play your round, hole out every putt (no gimmees) and get it signed at the end. Write "For Handicap" on the card and then hand it in to the handicap committee as a supplemental card. Doesn't just have to be qualifiers or competition cards that are used for handicaps.

You do need to sign in for a Supplemental before you go out.

It doesn't matter whether I'm a professional or not.
It doesnt alter his scores and as far as I'm aware, I'm still entitled to my opinion which was what I gave....... IMO
I would agree with you bob. There is no way that someone with such a high handicap could pull off flawless rounds like that without having done something untoward. People with high handicaps are not consistent golfers. They have the ability to play as well as this guy performed in spurts of a few holes but they will always throw in a double bogey or six. For him to play like that over 36 holes smells like Grimsby

I didn't know that. If you sign in before playing do you have to hand in your card at the end of the round or is it optional. For instance if you go out and have a shocker (8 or 10 shots worse than handicap) do you have to hand in that card or is it up to you?

If you don't hand the card in you get 0.1 back by default.

Our first Stableford comp of the year was won with 47 points. The most recent was won with 46 points. I know both players very well and neither are cheaters and relished their handicap cuts. Bob's assertion that either/both are "almost certainly cheating" is disgusting from a golf pro.

No choice the whole principal of supplementary cards is to try and simulate a comp round so you know play well and get a cut, poorly and 0.1 back.
This was a h/cap system change back in the day you do as you said have a stormer mark the card for handicap and get a general play card.

I'm not sure why you're deliberately misreading Bob's point, anyone can have a decent round, but back to back on the same day.....really

The fact he's a golf pro is irrelevant to handicap discussions, unless he's a handicap sec also. In fact it could be more relevant as he sees a mix if handicaps on a regular basis and knows what they are capable of!!!

I'm a high court judge and I reckon he cheated to win a little pot and a pro shop voucher :D:o

If I was the host club I'd be worried about what sort of turn out there'll be next year. I, for one, have pretty much stopped entering Opens because the scores needed nowadays is just crazy. For many low handicappers, they have to shoot a course record and then some just to get somwhere close.

For a 20 h'capper to shoot a round like that, yes it's possible, and on the rare occasion I'd say its probable. For them to do it twice in a year is unlikely but twice in a day... If I was the h'cap Sec for the host club I'd have been on the phone before declaring the result. If the guy has an active h'cap and just hasn't played many comps this year it's just a case of grin and bear it.

Amen.

I thought your handicap was meant to represent the best you could play rather than your 'casual' form... Think this 'winners' h'cap was more to do with the latter rather than the former...

It is due to some 'dubious' scores at my home course that i have barely played a medal round this year. We have had a 21 handicapper carding a 78 ?!?!?!?! of the medal tees, and several other winning rounds in the 50's.

I'm a 21 handicapper and recently carded a 79.... I've also carded a 96, 89, 92, 84.

I really dont see why shooting a low score (or 2) is such a big deal.

Surely in a low handicappers career you've shot some low scores on your journey that dont represent your handicap?

Played in the Alyth Open yesterday and the Scratch score was 67 the guy is a member and plays of +3 think the par is 70 so he was -3 scratch the winning handicap scores were depending on the sections 67 -69 , but these scores are plain stupid and smack of a sharp pencil or total handicap protector

I don't get this, if you are a low handicapper then shouldn't you be expecting to shoot low scores on a regular basis anyway? Shouldn't you be relishing the challenge of possibly shooting a PB in order to win an Open comp? You seem to be doing the opposite and giving up because you think that you have no chance of winning, if everybody took that attitude then there would hardly be anyone entering. You mention crazy scores, does that mean that you think there is a problem with the handicap system? I thought that the whole point of the handicap system was to level the playing field so that players of different abilities could compete together with an equal chance of winning.

True i have, but when i would need to hit scratch scores in the high 50's just to come close to winning i begin to wonder why bother.
