Didn't play today as had work and few other commitments but my brother was playing in the Open comp at my dads club where to say the score that won was rather err exceptional.

My brother fresh off a win or should say clean sweep at his home club open at Bearsted down here in Kent, had another good day and won the scratch prize with rounds of 70 & 67 but I couldn't believe what the nett winning score for the open outright was when my dad first told me. The overall winner of the comp had nett rounds of 57 & 59! Off a handicap of 20 so he was sub 80 gross both rounds!

To me scores like this have to raise more than an eyebrow, yes we can all have a worldy of a day but sub 60 nett twice in one day imo suggest some serious Mexican handicap. My brother was also 3rd overall in the nett stakes with Nett 69 & 66, so for a 1 handicap player to have done so well and finishes nearly 20 shots behind the nett prize is a sign off eyebrows raised and thinking what more could you do!

My old man did say the irony of my brothers scores though in that he started both rounds with doubles and still pulled it back have to say makes me a little sick as he really has all our families golfing talent! Puts his clubs away between October and March yet still shoots the lights out! Lucky git.

Still can't get over 57&59 though!

Did anyone check the car park to see if he'd parked his donkey there with a sombrero hanging from the saddle? And does the winner get to choose the meal for the following years competition? If so then I suspect that burritos served with Dos Equis beer might be on the menu.

Really? Surely no matter how firm and hard running the fairways it shouldn't allow a 20 HC to play that well on 2 rounds.

people that hit 180 yds and have to hit hybrids for 2nd shots are in this weather finding they are 'out there' and smacking short clubs into holes. I played against a 22 h/cap recently that putted anything 100yds or under..........very succesfully.

I'm not saying thats the reason in this case, but its certainly a big factor in summer..........

It's threads like these that reinforce the fear of playing in competitions for a high handicapper like me (off 21).

Just because the guy played well he must be a cheat?

I've had days where I played 10 under my handicap, admittedly not followed by another, but is it outside the realms of possibility that someone could string 2 good rounds together?

Unfortunately I can tell that within golf there is always going to be that fear that I'm not allowed to play well as I too will be branded a cheat.

Lovely game.

It's not people with high handicaps playing well that is the problem. The fact that this guy shot 77 and 79 gross means that either he isn't a 20 handicapper and has been protecting his handicap or he has had the best round of his life followed by the 2nd best round of his life. I play off 18 but if I started shooting 10 or 12 over (even in friendly games with mates) then I would be putting in supplemental cards to the handicap committee rather than turning up for a comp off an artificially high handicap.

That's some scoring for a 20 h/cap player, one round is understandable but 2 does IMO raise eyebrows but doesn't automatically mean cheat.
With course conditions as they are then scores are lower as the ball is going much much further. You can get away with hitting hybrids as far as your driver was going which mean lots more chance of keeping on the fairway and short irons into greens.
Not a 20 h/cap anymore! 6 shots gone in 1 day that's a bit of a cut.....

Already the fella in question has been branded a cheat by a few on here with no evidence except the fact he shot 2 gret rounds, I know it can be done as I shot a 78-18=60 to win a medal. The reason I played well was I was playing 3-4 times a week so dont writethe guy off as a cheat just yet.

I'm sorry but it has to be said......
In my opinion......
A 20 h/cap playing in a big comp and shooting those scores is just ridiculous.
To shoot 45 plus s/ford points is almost certainly cheating, to do it again is cheating.
When I learned my golf, to even get 36 points you had to have a good day. 40 was outstanding.
Too many people today believe they should be able to shoot 36 points most times they go out and it's wrong. IMO

I feel for the 1 h/cap guy.
20 shots behind?
Level playing field my bum.

But were you playing that well 3-4 times a week and shooting those sort of scores? If you were and you didn't hand in supplemental cards then you should be ashamed of yourself for not informing the handicap committee of your current playing ability. It shouldn't just be scores in competitions that reduce your handicap.

Well said Bob.

Both posts who have defended the winner admit they are better than their handicap. The onus should be on you to play in as many qualifiers as possible so your handicap is a true reflection.

You can't state current handicap 21, unofficial handicap 18 and complain when someone calls you a bandit. Play in 1 qualifier a month and they become empty accusations

I would bet the fella who won the open comp had played in the mandatory minimum. Hope he enjoys his famous victory

Maybe should should take some time wonder why my handicap is like that?

99% of my games are with mates who score 28-33 points most weeks off their handicaps. I'm fairly consistent in scoring 33-37 points off of 21.

I play off 18 with them to give them slightly more chance of me not winning every week.

I very rarely play competitions purely for the reason of people like this putting me off... heaven forbid I have a good day and shoot a good score.

I'm not really having a pop, just play in qualifiers and get it down. If you're better than your handicap you've got a duty to reduce it in qualifiers or by supplementarys. Without that the system is a nonsense especially as bob says you expect to score around 36.

Without this you can't defend the fella in the op because you're cut from the same cloth
