Winning Open score to raise eyebrows!

I'm not really having a pop, just play in qualifiers and get it down. If you're better than your handicap you've got a duty to reduce it in qualifiers or by supplementarys. Without that the system is a nonsense especially as bob says you expect to score around 36.

Without this you can't defend the fella in the op because you're cut from the same cloth

To be fair I'm not really interested in playing competitons or qualifiers... golf for me is about 4-5 hours with my mates playing a game I enjoy in the countryside.

I'm not defending the guy as I know nothing about him.... what I am defending is the fact that someone coule have a couple of good rounds without cheating.

I hate the fact that just because somone plays well they get branded a bandit without any knowledge of their circumstances.

I'm sorry but it has to be said......
In my opinion......
A 20 h/cap playing in a big comp and shooting those scores is just ridiculous.
To shoot 45 plus s/ford points is almost certainly cheating, to do it again is cheating.
When I learned my golf, to even get 36 points you had to have a good day. 40 was outstanding.
Too many people today believe they should be able to shoot 36 points most times they go out and it's wrong. IMO

I feel for the 1 h/cap guy.
20 shots behind?
Level playing field my bum.

its one thing to say it's ridiculous to which I concur..........however, it's a bit OTT for a Professional to say that someone with an official handicap and a verified score is cheating!

what happens when the 1 h/cap guy has a phenomenal day and shoots a course record, no-one would call him a cheat!

I do understand where you are coming from though.

I havent had my handicap calculated yet but been consistently going round in around 97 (par 71) on my home course. I'd be embarrassed to hand in those score cards. Being a 20 handicap and going round twice in competition without blowing up once or twice just seems impossible to me.

The only knowledge of their circumstances that we need to know is that they shot net rounds of 57 and 59. It doesn't matter what their handicap is, if they are capable of shooting those scores then their handicaps are very wrong and they are massive bandits.

This^^^^^

A good round is your handicap minus about 1-4 shots, not 10+, and Deffo not back to back.

I reckon you should have played in 10 qualifiers in a year to play in an open

I played a guy yesterday off 24 in a matchplay competition. I had to give him 9 shots and he beat me 4+3 we scored a card as we were going around and he finished on 44 points.

Ive played with him enough times to know he just had a really good day, under no circumstances would I even consider him to be a cheat.

Look at my handicap, ive flown down this year am I a cheat as well?

And people wonder where golf gets its reputation from and why numbers are down. Prime example.

you should be slating the fella. Because of obvious cheating like this you get called a bandit when you have a good one.

to put it in context it's like you shooting back to back rounds in the 70's on a course set up to play tough.

Stuff like this is more to blame for falling numbers

The fact that your handicap is coming down like that clearly proves that you aren't a cheat. It means that you are improving and putting in cards that reflect this . You're doing exactly the right thing by having a handicap that actually reflects your playing ability.

Im not saying the guy has cheated the rounds, but that handicap has to have been protected for a wee while.

Sirens Handicap drop is prime example of how you can drop over a year. The guy could have kept his handicap whilst his ability has drastically changed over a year or two.

I'd consider myself a good 16 handicap and with some short game work I should be down to 12 by the end of the year. I have never broke 80 and never got close in a medal, so to smash it twice in one day for a 20 is ridiculous. Clearly if you are capable of those scores then your handicap is incorrect and IMO is cheating.

It doesn't matter whether I'm a professional or not.
It doesnt alter his scores and as far as I'm aware, I'm still entitled to my opinion which was what I gave....... IMO

Played a corporate day couple of weeks ago at West hill. The course is in good shape, but the greens were treacherous - just could not read anything and balls were turning viciously.. Everyone struggled on the day - both from the heat as well as the greens.

At the end of the day, most scores were in the mid 20s to the early 30s. As groups came into the club house, there were rumours of 42, 44 etc. Needless to say, murmurs of El Bandito were ringing in the air.. 3rd prize: 35, 2nd: 36 (both off 24). First prize.... 42!!! Everyone on my table nodded at each other and reached out for their sombrero, util we realised....

We had a lady winner!!!

Suddenly everyone was cheering her on. I think she was a high HC. Why is it that when a man shoots a great score, we cry Bandito, while we all love a lady getting a great score. (Reverse sexism?)

I can just imagine me telling my pro that I am playing better so can he please arbitrarily reduce my handicap so that other people won't call me names. They won't do it. We have asked

You don't have to tell your pro to do it. Play your round, hole out every putt (no gimmees) and get it signed at the end. Write "For Handicap" on the card and then hand it in to the handicap committee as a supplemental card. Doesn't just have to be qualifiers or competition cards that are used for handicaps.

Back to back net rounds in the 50's..... It's probably the sporting equivalent of scoring 5 goals in 2 games back to back, or back to back triple centuries.... It's rarer than rare.
I would be interested to see he certificate or know where his home club is..... If it is genuine, then I would expect such an achievement to get documented! Maybe Mike H and the guys could interview him and let us know how he did it. It undoubtedly would yeald some great advice for some of us on here....

Didn't play today as had work and few other commitments but my brother was playing in the Open comp at my dads club where to say the score that won was rather err exceptional.

so which was the course? Reading the above it wasn't Bearsted, so how that plays is rather irrelevant! We don't know the par, or the SSS let alone the CSS, yet people seem fully capable of judging the performance

as to the winning individual, on the basis that this was a Q competition and the prize table doesn't include a trip for 4 to Barbados to play golf for a week, well done I say. If the individual had a donkey, sombrero and 6 shooters he's not going to turn up at such Q events when he can rob the game of thousands by sticking to BB and team events.

I would also echo the comments that there are courses set up to suit many out there right now, as well as those for which conditions are very tough. Many have short dry rough, well watered true greens/aprons and long rolling fairways - the short but straight with solid short game guys are having a field day :)

Anyway, back to the plot, which course????
