Winning Open score to raise eyebrows!

In reality, if I was at a club now then I think with my standard of play, I would be off about 4 but obviously I would put in some slightly stage managed cards for handicap at a higher point than that so that I could have the chance to win a few board competitions off 7 or 8. :)

LOL

Remember to blob the last few holes so you're not called a bandit. Last thing you want to do is shoot under par when you don't need to ;)

just read an even better one than this about a 36 hole event last weekend and handicaps on another forum - knocks this into a cocked hat!

49 on the Sat, a poor 33 on the sunday but discussion in the bar reveal he'd previously won a comp at his away club but didn't think it mattered for his handicap .........good stuff

come on, someone somewhere much have had 50 this weekend in a comp.........

An example of what can happen when you don't 'know the full facts'! Also know as 'A little knowledge can be dangerous'!

Conditions of Competition of 36 holes probably state that Handicap for 2nd round is starting handicap for 1st. So your 'laziness on sec's part' is utter rubbish!

ESRs now replace the 'General Play Adjustment'/Observation/Rule 19/23. Deemed to have been applied too inconsistently - and there is at least 1 example in this thread (I think) where that's the case. Yours +2 cut could well have been too!
Read this http://www.cgc-ni.com/uploads/CONGU ESR.pdf

I agree that system can be playing catch-up with improvers though. This guy will probably be off 12 or 13 (possibly even 11) from now though!

bit of an extreme reaction, calm down let the blood pressure drop... And step away from the lap top. You know as well as I do that applying the cut would have been a very sensible solution.
I have self edited - I think we are of two different stand points and don't care to argue here or anywhere.

Someone has to bring some common sense to that forum - and it's not me!

Both posts who have defended the winner admit they are better than their handicap. The onus should be on you to play in as many qualifiers as possible so your handicap is a true reflection.

You can't state current handicap 21, unofficial handicap 18 and complain when someone calls you a bandit. Play in 1 qualifier a month and they become empty accusations

I would bet the fella who won the open comp had played in the mandatory minimum. Hope he enjoys his famous victory

Isnt the term bandit used as a wind up every time a high handicapper has a day out ? I had 44 points off 20 last month and got loads of good natured abuse. I usually have a very good round every year but my handicap doesn't lie, I play every Wednesday and Saturday in qualifying competitions so my handicap is spot on. I agree though after a day out its unlikely I could do it again the next day.

Well we've just had a chap win the monthly stableford with 54 points off 20! Shot 73 par 71! Had a nice cut to 14. Something! That's a worldie!

Wow! That's incredible, is he a rapidly improving beginner?

Looking at his card I have to say I believe it's genuine as he birdied the last two holes and I imagine that anybody manipulating their handicap would not do that if they were already sure of winning the comp.

I'm sorry but thats ridiculous.
If i were the handicap secretary he'd be a Cat 1 golfer in the next comp he entered.
He's played to 2 and in the next comp he'll be allowed to play off 15 !!!!

Followed this thread from the start today and some very interesting views. With regards to the above I find it very hard to believe that a genuine 20 handicapper can shoot 2 over. With the OP situation everybody can have a good round but to then follow it up with something almost as good is suspicious.

I don't doubt him at all and good on him. Spoke to one of my mates who also played on Sunday and he said the course was playing really well. The greens were really receptive after heavy rain over night and the fairways are still running as they are still very firm. It can happen to any of us on a given day. On the op I don't doubt it could happen either, if he was in the zone and everything clicked 36 holes on the same day could happen. Another young lad has carded three rounds in the 40's recently but he is young and playing twice a day now that the schools have finished, the system is slowly catching up with him and will prob now get an esr too.

Just a tad lol
I bet the lad who had 43 thought he was in with a shout.

Too true. Only ask as the post above said that the course was playing well and Greens were receptive which I would have thought would have meant a whole bunch of scores close together. With a gap that wide and a guy of 20 shooting 2 over just not buying it. When I was off 20 I never got anywhere near that score. Think 14 over was the best I managed

Dude shoots 18 under handicap for 54 points of net 53 and you have no doubts whatsoever. Even with those course conditions there is no way I can fathom someone of that handicap shooting a gross +2. Did he also have the lowest gross score as well!

With Juniors I can see them getting massive cuts In short periods due to term times or half terms giving them extended playing periods

Always going to be a gap if someone throws in the round of their life surely? If you also look half the field played to hcp or better. That's rather high I think compared to the results I usually see. But yeah with 43 points I'd have thought I'd be winning!

But why do it in a run of the mill monthly stableford? There's a board comp this week and next, if you're saving it up and managing your hcp do it then surely rather than £30 in pro shop vouchers?

You'd have thought with those conditions the scores would be bunched and a lot of countbacks to judge finishing positions. But the gaps give off a smell.

First and only time I shot a +2 round of 73 was off of 9 and I played out of my skin. Never done it since
