Surely Lee Westwood is getting close to he`s first major but is it possible he could replicate Monty and never gain one.Westwood has had 9 top 5`s in majors to Monty 6,obviously Montys chance has gone but Westwwod must be getting very close now and I would put him as favourite in the last three majors of the year.Lee losing out in this years Masters tournament really seemed to get to him big time and just maybe he`s thinking himself will it ever happen but as we saw he`s putting was bad didnt he take 21 more puts than Mickelson for the tournament!!.I`m a big fan of Westwood,I followed him around a few years back at the English Open and he seemed a really nice guy,I will back him this year at the Open as youve got to think that its he`s time for a major this year.

Westwood is not good enough to be the new Monty.

Plain and simple.

I am a big fan of Westwood and hope he can do it. Same with Donald. As to whether they do or not it remains to be seen but I think Westwood in particular needs to find a way to get the putter working. I don't think it is the short game per se that is the achilles heel but his inability to hole out at crucial times either for that vital birdie or to save par

I was refering to Westwood replicating Monty not winning a major as "The new Monty" but if you want to see it that way Westwood WILL win a major and Monty WILL NOT.I never really rated Monty as you can only rate a champion golfer on he`s major merits and Monty knows this and hates it.............

I think Lee will end up with 4 majors, he will be Englands number 2 all time golfer, until Luke ends up with 6 or 7.

Never rated Monty, hahahahahahahaha, yet you rate a man who has proven he's probably a bigger bottle merchant than Monty and certainly a worse putter. Westwood and major win will never be heard in the same sentence mark my words.

I agree with what your saying about Luke, just feel that when the guy gets one its going to be a bonanza,I think he could beat Faldo`s major tally.

Monty never had the right temperement to win a major and thats why he was always left wanting as a champion golfer,Westwood and Donald do have the right temperament(both been world no1) and its only a matter of time before they achieve their first major.

Agreed, plus the small matter of Tiger Woods, many golfers now in their 40's never got the success their talent deserved because of Tiger's dominance.

If Westwood carries on hitting the ball as well as is right now for a couple of years, one weekend he will putt half decent and win one.

He is running out of chances though and he knows it. His demeanour after the Masters wasn't encouraging.

Maybe so but what makes Westwood any different? He is older than Woods.

Westwood had his chance at the Masters 2 years ago when he caught Phil on a good day, I can't see him get as close again, he has too much doubt in his putting.

Edit to add - I'd love to see him win a major or 2

I'd love to see Westwood grab a major but, sadly, I fear his chance has almost gone. With Monty the point where he changed from a contender to an also ran at majors was almost imperceptible - that day is fast approaching for Lee with the next generation coming up.

Having said that, if DC can do it why not Westwood?

I agree with The Craw.
I think Lee has missed his chance, pity really.
I have followed his career since he was 14 when he looked a real star in the making.
Along with Michael Welch and Gary Harris

Monty was a great player who was very adaptable. He contended & came very close to winning both the US Open & US PGA. He didn't really threaten as much as he should at the open & never the masters. Compare this to Westwood who has had chances at all 4 of them. They are both similar in as much as tee to green they are/were fantastic, but on the green (& around it in Westwood's case) they are/were average. Monty putted great in the ryder cup, but for some reason couldn't replicate that in a major. I think Westwood has improved in his ability around the green, but on the green he struggles on occasions.

Bottom line is it will become harder with age for Westwood. He is certainly good enough. Dare I say it, but perhaps he ought to consider the cheat stick?

He tried the belly putter at Augusta last year and he was pish with that too!

I remember him putting half decent with a Ping UG_le putter, a mallet head design which is more forgiving so I don't understand why he's trying to putt with his heel toe weighted Anser now.

No room for Mrs Doubtfire,I'm afraid,Westwoods a class act,not a sulking tantrum diva,in fact lets talk about Paul Lawrie, did'nt he win a Maior, and he contnues to play well,Faldo took care of the adopted scot a long time ago...

:blah::blah::blah:

Westwood's record doesn't even come close to Colin's. Keep taking your tablets.
