Do the studs screw off the sports direct ones?

Yep.
However, I wore some FJ shoes without the spikes in for a while, it damaged the plastic receiver in the shoe on a couple of them and I couldn't get the spikes back in at all.
So if you plan to break them in without spikes, stick to soft ground.
I used one of the these to remove the S. Direct ones - the bit with multiple lugs on it;

Perfect these might be the ones ! Is the grip good without the spikes in? I will probably be using them 80% of the time without them in

Not tried them without the spikes, however once you have played a round with them in, I doubt you'd take them out!
I have Nike Summer Golf shoes (spikeless) and Ecco Gortex (spikeless) shoes too. I often carry an alternative pair and change after 9 holes. (soft feet!)
If the course is wet, spike shoes really come into their own and you can really feel the grip they provide.
In very dry weather, the difference is less noticeable, but I think spikes do still have a slight edge.

Anyway the S Direct Callaways have a deep tread pattern on the base of the shoe, so they should perform in line with most spikeless shoes I guess.
