Why is the players championship not a major?

Ok for the sake of the pedantic ones

The Open Championship

And it's also returning to Royal Portrush

Well if you are going to take issue with others about what it's called, then YOU need to get it right. 'British Open' is acceptable, if wrong, to me - it differentiates between it and the US Open when discussing Golf with yanks. And if you have to resort to using the name to measure its' quality, then something is definitely amiss.

The Players is a major in all but name! And 1 silly, fantastic hole!

I would argue that it's not British at all and actually Scottish (if it's going to be prefixed with a country). It merely gets loaned out to English clubs/courses every other year. ;)

Whilst I accept that most of the world's top players hold cards for the PGA Tour I still can never regard as a Major an event that restricts entry to members of only one Tour.

Don't need to call it the British Open to differentiate with the US Open - one is called US Open the other isn't - simple

And the Players is not a major - and never will be

Hey who made you an expert on British sport. You think the New Zealand Open should be a major.:D

Neutrality/Independence tends to mean more measured/unbiased opinions!

Though who was the idiot that suggested a Major in Australia?! Though the way the whole of NZ stopped for the Aussie Americas Cup win (over US) was amazing!

Been a Kiwi winner at both The Open and The US Open - and one at The Players too!

The R&A have quickly come out to cool the Portrush rumours, 130,000 on the last day of the Irish Open a couple of years ago and there questioning the infrastructure seems a little strange to me! What do you guys think?

Do you really stupidly 'selective read' posts as much as that post infers!

Have a nice day

You 2 nobheads taking over every thread makes this forum really hard to read these days.

Ireland's not Britain is my point

You can argue the point about that as much as you like, I really don't care. The fact remains that if the event is taken to Portrush again it will still be the Open Championship, the Open or the British Open. Call it whatever you want, it's still the same tournament.
