I've not given up, but since my marrage broke down last month and spare time and money is going to be directed towards my 7 year old son who I only see a couple of days a week now.

Will still play when I can, but will be few and far between.

I "retired" due to a combination of factors.

1 My golf is awful

2 I'm having more fun going swimming etc etc with my daughter.

It saves me a fortune on a weekend as I'm not buying golf related gubbins and drinking beer in the clubhouse afterwards.

I gave it up for 6 years due to working weekends, lower income than now and also that the course was undergoing a conversion to 18 holes and the place was a mess.

remarried, too much going on, something had to give - that was golf, 14 years ago........ started playing again about 4 years ago. Struggled pretty badly to regain any kind of form, until this year, well the last couple of months. Now striking the ball probably better than ever, just need to play some comps and see if we can't effect the handicap some......

I started a new job and after the first year had about 10 games the second year was prob less than half of that as I was away all the time so gave up my membership.
Got a promotion recently which unusually allows me more time to play so took it back up at the start of the season.
Absolutely loving it, gutted about the 6 year exodus !!!

Been out of the game for 6/7 years almost solely down to a wrecked knee from rugby, finally seems to be stable again though how long it will last this time who knows

I plan to give up in about 45 yrs when, after shooting my age (itll be 86 by then!!)by birdie ing? the last with a curling 40 footer, I drop dead of heart attack in the arms of my hot, leggy 25 yr old caddie/massuese/swing guru...

I just started but already know why I will give up one day: lack of people to play with.

In competition all the 4-ball are more or less the same every time and I can't find any opportunity to join in. The age difference (I'm 31 and the average member is over 50) could be a reason so at the end of the membership I will join another group (not club) that plays on public courses. Maybe I'll have better luck there.

Don't you have roll ups ? One of the main reaaons I joined my club was that they have roll ups nearly every day, so it took no time to meet a lot of members.

I tend to play with the same two or three in medals, but we have start sheets, so can put your name down to play with others if you wish. Our Pro also makes sure everyone gets a game. The club does have a reputation for being one of the friendliest in the area.

ask in the pro-shop if they know of anyone wanting to play they'll know who's after ppl to play with & should always try & help members find groups to join

reason i gave up - lost the love of the game

after being let go as an assistant

(daily grief from one of my bosses who really wasnt a morning person) so i almost dreaded when they came in ..and im sure it showed (so i contributed too)

But it was what id strived for so put up with it,& when u fail at what youve tried & wanted its hard to carry on

didnt swing a club for nearly 10 years after that

I gave up for about 10 years because the club that I was a member at had appeared to attract the worst selection of humanity.

I'd been a junior member and, unfortunately, even though I was in my early twenties, various older members still viewed me as a junior and I was treated accordingly.

There were no practice facilities so we used to go out in the late evening and practice chipping and putting. Judging by the reactions from some of the members at this gross act of golfing indecency I sometimes wondered whether they'd have been more accepting of me taking a class A drug in the member's lounge!!!

The last straw was getting disqualified for taking three hours and forty five minutes in a competition! I was informed of this as I walked off the 18th green. No official meeting or chance of appeal.

I walked out and never went back.

I had a laugh recently though. It appears that the head pro, secretary and the lady who had worked behind the bar were all fired for financial transgressions. Apparently, she'd be handing out free drinks to the pro and Sec at will.

Maybe if the members had spent more time watching them and less time watching us their blatant theft wouldn't have gone on for so long!!!

I only took the game up again two years ago and that was because playing cricket had started to annoy me and my body couldn't recover like it used to.

Gave up when my parents couldn't afford to put me through the PGA system to get qualified and the club and pro wouldn't sponsor me. Jacked it in until around 30 (twelve years) by which time I'd found lager, women and Sunday morning footie (mainly 90 minutes footie and more lager) Got back into it and did ok but didn't practice much and so handicap went up to 11. Jacked it in again for a few years when my dad was ill with cancer and when my mum first had health issues but got back into it about 8 years ago and enjoying it more than ever even if the handicap still goes north
