I cant vote, some are and some arent.

I've only ever met 2 though, Paul Casey who was an absolute howl, really down to earth, friendly & chatty.

And Thomas Bjorn who was the most miserable sod i've ever met, wouldnt speak to anyone, wouldnt acknowledge anyone.

From what you pick up on the tele, obviously some are more arrogant than others, just as people are in all walks of life i'd say!

You cant tar them all with the same brush!

I voted

C : some are arrogant, but most aren't natural givers emotionally, so they don't know how to behave comfortably in front of the media / public.

Someone like Monty who always says what he feels, gets slated. Someone like Faldo who was so worried about getting slated, used to keep it all in - so he got slated. Either way, you get slated.

Golf is an insular game, where the players have to rely on their own mental strength to be competitive.

If you practise keeping a stiff upper lip all the time, you will probably come accross as arrogant half the time.

Also many of the modern media and public ARE a pain in the arse to deal with, so who wouldn't want to tell them where to go, even if you know you can't.

You can't tar everyone with the same brush, whatever.

Why are golf pros so arrogant?

or if you prefer...

ARE golf pros arrogant, if so why?

I am a golf pro and this question has got me stark raving mad.
I spend hours in here trying to help people and trying to be polite to some people who perhaps deserve less and you come in and ask that question.
If, as you say you want to be a golf teacher, dont give up your day job if thats your attitude.
I agree with the posts that some are arrogant but how dare you try and infer we are all them same.
I just spent an hour and a half this morning teaching juniors in the rain how to play golf as are 100s of pros all around the country. Does that make me selfish and arrogant?
You might as well have asked 'why are all football supporters hooligans'
Then see what kind of reaction you get.
Of course you may have been directing the question at tour pros not club pros but even so, You cant possibly generalise about a large collection of people and say they are all the same.
I dont normally get very angry, but this has got me seething.

Golf pros are no more arrogant than other human beings. Compared with professional footballers and other sportsmen, golfers are saints. I'd like to ask the OP what made him ask the question. Calm down, Bob!

Anyhow, back to the OP.

It is a case of some are, some arent, same with footballers.

I can justify it to an extent, imagine being pestered your whole life. Seve for example loathes people approaching him when he is out for dinner or with his kids, I love the man and totally respect that stance.

Pros I have met who are great, Ian Poulter, Benn Barham, Graeme McDowell, Oliver Wilson, Jeev Milkha Singh, Miguel Angel Jiminez, Lee Westwood plus a few more.

Ignorant ones by the OP definition, Monty, Sergio Garcia, Paul Lawrie, Reteif Goosen.

The king of the arrogant though is Justin Rose, Im not going into the full details but a bob on the nose would be deserved in my eyes.

word!

They arent,
Ive met a few that are a bit smug but by the same token ive met some who will help you out whenever and however they possibly can. The pro at my club is probably one of the friendleist, helpful and approachable people ive ever met.

Andy

Is it just golf pros that you find arrogant or people from all walks of life? maybe its you thats a bit of a nob and you bring out that side in people? ;)

If I have a really bad day at work (and they do happen!!) then the last thing I want is someone asking for something really trivial or stupid.

The top pros are just the same. They usually get bad press or negative comments for their behaviour after a round. Not signing autographs seems to be the best one. If they feel like I do after a bad day, all they will want to do is go and give the golf bag a good kicking.

Practice days and Pro-Ams are the best time to ask for autographs and photos, not after a bad day on the course.

I think peoples expectation is too high, these guys are high profile, but they hurt just like you and I do after a really shitty day.

Arrogant... well you do need a certain amount of self beleif, and a particular mindset to succeed in any sport. If this comes across as arrogance then maybe it is being misread. If it is out and out arrogance then it is bad behaviour.

Hehe.... take a pill Bob, no-one is pointing a finger at you :)

The option "ARE golf pros arrogant?" is available... so you could just answer "No" :p

Personally I'd help anyone and always have time for a laugh especially if a cigarette is involved. I'm 100% sure you come into that category too, so please stop jumping on everything I post.. it's like watching Homer and Mono! :p

Yeh, cheers for that chipsandegg!.... it's probably me :D :D :D hehe

Lets all take a chill-pill here (everyone) before it gets out of hand please?

I think it is a poor poll as it is very generalistic as there is no middle ground and there is no clarification as to what type(s) of pro it refers to.

Best let this one lie.

A persons profession doesn't dictate whether they are arrogant or not.
People are people.
If you ask some of the guys that work for me, they may say that they think I am arrogant, at work!

Out of office or after the cameras are off, I think most people are different. I may be wrong but sometimes people HAVE to put up a shield. That sometimes comes across as arrogance.
