Spitting

Then why are you worried about it? Doesn't seem to be a problem.

It’s the same as gratuitous and loud swearing in public perhaps….it may be normal and fine for you, but then accept that others may and probably do think lesser of you for doing it

Even if they don’t say anything, they are probably thinking it…

I'm not sure it's that big an issue if it can be done discreetly so to speak, sometimes you need to spit and it can't be helped, certainly not on a green though or with other people in your vicinity.

Note taken. Do not spit in the UK.

Pretty clear this is a cultural thing. When I lived in Korea they had no problem spitting and even saw people spit indoors or on trains. I think its accepted everywhere that spitting at someone is inappropriate.

Do people not use chewing tobacco in the UK?

I have pretty bad allergies to pollen and grass so always have tissues/handkerchief to wipe/dab my dripping nose. I also regularly have post nasal drip and will occasionally feel like I need to spit (when running or cycling mostly). I understand it is gross.

Peeing on the course at one of my clubs is prohibited, but toilets are readily available. I'd much rather have someone spit on my yard than pee on it.

No it's not common.

I believe Mandofred is American and doesn't see any problem with spitting, in India and China it's ok too. But in the UK it's seen as something really disgusting. I think this stems from Victorian times where spitting was associated with spread of diseases like TB. Spittting in public is a criminal offence in many parts of the UK, it's deeply ingrained as highly offensive.

A bit left field but my mum was a theatre sister in a TB hospital in the 40’s and early 50’s. You were the Devil’s spawn if you spited.

Sunshine has nailed it; it's entirely a cultural thing. As a kid, I'd have got a whack from my Mum if she'd seen me spitting. In the UK it's akin to farting in a lift, or not cleaning up your dog's mess. Most people just don't do it. If you need to do it (swallowed a fly or whatever) then you do it out of sight or into a hanky or similar. An habitual spitter will be judged - although usually with a tut so I doubt they care much.

Partially correct. I've stated I don't see any issue with spitting if you need to....and I will continue to do so if I need to. I am not going to carry a hanky or whatever "just in case" I need to spit....that to me is pretty disgusting. I do not think it is ok to just wander down the fairway pretending to be a lawn sprinkler and letting spit fly everywhere. I don't think there is anything wrong with peeing on a tree/bush as well.....I do not think it is ok to wander down the fairway peeing like a firehose. People are blowing things up more than they need to......as usual.
