Why 4?

I always used to play with just 3 wedges (PW, SW, LW) until about a year ago when I took my 3 iron out and replaced it with a Gap Wedge.

I did it because I had a gap of almost 30 yards in distance on full swings between my 54 deg Sand Wedge and 47 deg Pitching Wedge. I found myself misjudging the distance too often when I had a 110-120 yard shot and had to hit a three quarter pitching wedge.

I now have a gap between my 4iron and 3 hybrid of about 25 yards in carry distance which is obviously not ideal but I would much prefer to have this gap all the way up there than in my scoring clubs, as I have way more shots between 105-135yds than I do between 205-230yds... especially at my home course...

I was playing on Sunday with another forum member who will remain nameless who on the 17th tee admitted he was carrying 5 wedges. On checking the contents of his golf bag not only was it evident that he was carrying too many clubs but he was also carrying two wedges which were exactly same.
Woosie has nothing on this guy!

That previously unnamed forum member was me. What Ayrhead fails to appreciate is that by carrying 5 wedges I have a large array of clubs to choose from to either fluff, top, duff or mis-hit.

But seriously, I carry Driver, 3 wood and rescue.

Irons: 5,6,7,8,9,46deg W (not 48 as previously thought)

Vokeys: 48, 52,56,60

+ Putter makes 14.

I don't need irons less than a 5 because the rescue fills the gap.

So, why shouldn't I carry 5 wedges ? They all go different distances and I can fit them within the 14 club limit without having to drop anything else out the bag. Does he expect me to carry a "jigger", brassie, spoon or the like ? Perhaps a ladies 9 wood should be considered?

19 degrees. It's the only club that I can realistically shape and hit different distances. So, it fills in nicely for 3 and 4 iron distance.

not questioning you as to what you have in the bag as that is every players own choice & good luck to them,but why do u feel the NEED for 5 , saying that, i have 4 but hardly ever use the s/w , only reason its still in there is i dont need the space for anything else right now ..

I don't really need them, the 5th one (48 deg Vokey) was a surprise Xmas present from Mrs SS2.

Think of me as an uglier form of Gollum from Lord Of The Rings going round the course massaging my 5 wedges and whispering "my precious..."

And we were led to belive that Scottish golfers didn't hit anything over a foot high into the green for the good old 'bump & run' or a putter from 75 yards in if possible.

Each to their own. I think the only person who should care is the player themselves - if it works and you are comfortable using it - stick with it

Despite having 5 wedges, very few shots him with them go above a foot off the ground. A full lob wedge shot may rise to about waist height if I open the face.

I would never bother with 4 wedges as I can't see the point and I do not subscribe to the theories posted about having more options around the green. I think that if most golfers used the same club for all shots under 80 yards including their chips and practiced solely with that club then their touch and scores would improve. All these wedges give you too many choices and create doubt.

This to me is another example of making a simple game complicated.

Golf gear manufacturers need to keep finding ways to sell you more stuff and I believe that this is the single biggest reason that there are more people carrying more wedges these days. You've bought 5 wedges?! Titleist must love you! You are a perfect fit with their marketing department! Personally, I think you've been had.

If it suits you then you carry 4 wedges but I think it's unecessary, over-complicated and a waste of money.
