.... I played football at a high standard until I was about 18 .....

Quite obviously you didn't, or the thought of earning ridiculous amounts of money from kicking a bag of wind round a field repulsed you so much you felt duty bound to stop?

I would have loved to earn all the cash that they earn of course. However, like the current crop of players who can't cut it at international level, I was never really good enough to make it as a pro.

That said, I did get paid to play for Stafford Rangers for a season when I was at University...

I enjoyed football and wish I could still play of course (knees are shot) but if I had my time again, I would focus on rugby and cricket. Nicer people and better social side!

Take a breath and re read the posts. Your facts are wrong. At no stage did I say that we were deserving of any victory, you made a statement that was wrong.

Ball retention most definately is not the holy grail coupled with your intelligent distribution or otherwise. Scoring more goals than the opposition is (obviously) the point of the game, most goals are scored from a turnover in posession in the attacking half of the field, not from extended periods of possession.

Why would anyone want to go and play in a league abroad which has less exposure, less money and less competition than where they are currently playing?

Hype or press suggestion has nothing to do with it. Common sense tells you that the EPL is the big payer with the biggest pool of world talent. Playing elsewhere apart from maybe 1 club (Champs League losers) is hardly a step up!

I'm firmly in Toon's camp on this whoooooole debate.

The England team were crap, and were crap to watch, and in all honesty, I'm glad that we didnt 'scrape' thru still playing crap football.

Watching the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, has just gone to show just how far behind we actually are in skill levels, and how the game can & should be played.

We should have flown them home in frickin economy too, that would have brought them down a peg or 2.

toon, I'm not even English, let alone being from Middlesbrough, I merely live here.

It's well known that the likes of Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney attract interested from abroad. Only last year Lampard was nearly at Inter. English players prefer to stay in England and none of the above have whored themselves to foreign nations the way other players have. Just because no formal bids are made doesn't mean that the top continental teams aren't making the odd enquiry about the availability of Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole and others.

At no stage am I saying that the players don't shoulder some of the blame but in this poll I had to go for a manager who flat out refused to change a system that wasn't working and never entertained the system that all the major players in the squad have been playing successfully in for two or three seasons.

Dodger, why not try to construct a sentence or two which backs up your opinion instead of your usual "he/ they/ everybody is psh" argument.

These are all opinions on this thread, we don't have to share each others. It's ok to have thoughts of your own.

Where would you wish me to begin? Each of your posts on this subject has been 'I am correct'.

England are pish and the performances of late I would say back that claim up fairly well.

Seems to me you don't like listening to anyones thoughts but you own.

Now that is my opinion and my thoughts. Feel free to disagree....I am sure you will. ;)

You asked..

Lot's of Toon's (and other's) stuff is bang on, but if there is something I disagree with I'll put an (my) alternative point of view across, it's not necessarily right, it's what i think and it furthers the debate. Or I am I mistaken in the purpose of a forum?

Playing, coaching and managing in football was an all consuming passion for me for the last 25years. I understand and really love the passion that people discuss the game with, particularly the national team. Stand by your own opinions if you think their valid, if not stand in the queue behind the crowd.

Agree with most that the players were truly dreadfull,But imo the managers at fault the most for taking players that were to old and slow,Terry, Upson, Carragher,Heskey.

Players that were unfit King,Barry. Playing a system that didnt work and not changing it. Playing players not in their best positions.Making like for like substitutions when something differant was called for.

As for the case of saying the players are not good enough
Terry Upson Carragher Heskey i would agree they are far from good enough.
A. Cole is regarded as one of the best in the world at left back.Rooney and Gerrard are also considerd world class.Lampard, Barry, J Cole, wouldnt play for the best teams in England if they couldnt play.

Alex Fergison wouldnt have Rooney,Carrick,Ferdinand In his team if he thought they couldnt play, how many times have we heard Fergison and Hanson describing Rooney and Gerrard as world class.

Two Scots who have been in the game a long time and know more about the game than all of us put together.

Hope Cappello goes and keep a few of the better players and bring in alot of the younger ones.
