Thing is toonarmy we all have experienced huge waits before playing our next shot. It has happened to me in a major open where I had nearly 15 minutes to wait on a par 3 (some joker kept hitting into the water several groups in front). I was homing in on a win but I didn't add adrenalin into my equation.

In my view as a professional sportsman with access to the greatest sports coaches and psychologists he just didn't react well under the pressure. I have heard it said by several top coaches on Sky etc that the swing actually looked "tired" in that he was a spent force physically and mentally. With 8 order of merits and numerous worldwide titles it isn't as if he didn't know how to close the deal.

I agree he hit it into probably the worst place possible but the way he played from there showed his scrambled thinking.

Like I say, in my opinion a true champion, that is to say a major winner, has the clarity of thought and control of his game to perform under that extremity of pressure

Ah, now then. May I cite one Mr Harrington as evidence to the contrary? To stick the ball into the burn on the 18th once could be unfortunate, to do it twice... :p

I think andra was right when he said that Lyle winning Majors when he did was harder (you only have to look at the betting to see how hard it was to pick a winner) whereas now Woods is automatic favourite (and by some distance) but if he doesn't perform, it could be one of many.

Personally, I'm quite happy for most to think the Englishman is greater than the Scotsman! :D

If greatness is measured by winning a major, I just find it really difficult to see Paul Lawrie as one of the greatest golfers of his era! He played the best golf of his life during the right four days AND then still had people falling over themselves to give it to him. For that he now achieves greatness and considered a better golfer than Monty Can't be right! :D

Vincent, you can fluke one major but you can't fluke two. The 2 major clan - Lyle, Daly, Goosen etc are great players, Lee Janzen...hmmm.

Oi, Toon stop nicking our golfers, we have few enough without you insinuating that Lyle is a Sassenach. His folks are Scots, that's good enough for us.

Toonarmy, you rugger team looks like the cast from Castaway.

Your moto is the same as Irelands was 15 years ago

'YOU'LL DO'

Tony Cascarino only admitted recently that he was inelligable to play for them as his granny wasn't Irish.

Birdieman,
I acknowledge that two Majors cannot be a fluke (although many held up Andy North in the 70s as a example of just that!) and that Lyle is a special golfer. However to say that such a comparison is totally one-sided does under-estimate the achievements of Monty.
My opinion is that Monty is "greater", others will think Lyle, but I would argue that it is a closer call than many on here say.

Actually, I think you'll find they've looked more like the cast from 'Lost' of late...

And if you lot want to claim Lyle as a Jock 'cos of his parents and being born in England, then I'm having Monty for growing up and living in England! :p
