Jacklin,bitter old man?

I agree with this sentiment, Monty epic European tour record, Ryder cup legend but no major winner. But I also think simply winning a major shouldn't be enough on its own there should be a minimum number of tour wins to go with it etc.

Then again I think a HOF is a naff thing it's a massively American thing to just celebrate any who they can fawn over for the sake of saying well he's a hall of famer! Would we think any less of the careers of Woods, Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Hogan, Faldo, Els etc if there was no hall of fame like in English football! No we'd simply say like we do about Pele, Maradona, Moore, Charlton etc that they are simply the greats of the game and legends in their own right

All a hall of fame does is lump records like Montys et al in with the true greats rather than separating them. I have nothing against Monty at all I'm actually one of the few who like him but think he's done superb for European golf and should be honoured by the European tour but not the US based HOF!

This is what it says on the HOF website

Members

The World Golf Hall of Fame is home to the game's greatest players and contributors. Membership is, quite simply, golf's highest honor. Those recognized within the Hall of Fame represent individuals who have positively impacted the game of golf on the grandest scale. Golfers, both professional and amateur, architects, journalists, innovators and teachers are among those celebrated within the World Golf Hall of Fame.

I'm not the biggest fan of Monty, but he has a better record than many and qualifies for induction based on that alone, at least I think so. Fader's right the, the whole HOF thing is an Americanism, they have them for most sports. It's just a money based process to give "worldwide" recognition to members. The Martial Arts Hall of Fame is one, with tons of "Masters" that are self promoted and wouldn't reach anyone's radar outside their own town. Monty's membership won't change the taste of my coffee, nor will it make him a more likeable person, I wouldn't get too caught up in who's in and who's not.

On the criteria above he gets in but he will never be ont of the true greats in the world game

The best quote I heard about him was 'yes he's a killer in Europe but in America he couldn't even get arrested'

The World HOF is an irrelevance. To begin with, they had a load of indisputably great players to put in, but as time has moved on, not so much, so disputes over whether Monty should be included or whether Chi Chi Rodriguez belongs start up. It is basically a tourist attraction for Americans, so it is best just to treat it as such and ignore any rational analysis of who should or shouldn't belong.

To be fair, though, I doubt they will be inducting Shaun Micheel or Rich Beem anytime soon.
What he said. The whole thing is totally subjective, completely irrelevant and not worth worrying about.

I think thats a bit unfair given his best results in majors came mainly in the US and also he didnt play much in the US either. In his pomp Monty could easily have won frequently on the PGA tour should he have chosen to play on it.

Just remember Monty did win in the US. He won $1m while winning the old Andersen Consulting Matchplay at Scottsdale in 97 the year before this became swallowed up as the WGC matchplay ;)

agree with this...............apart from the word Pomp which has me head scratching:mmm:

I am not really worried about the Hall of Fame, who is in it etc. but what does niggle me is that a fellow professional sportsman has said that someone else does not deserve the accolade. You may not like it, you may disagree but you put on a smile and give out the usual press platitudes. There really is no need to openly look to belittle the career of another professional sportsman or call them undeserving.

What he said.....

Probably the same people were bawling when Westwood then luuuuuuke got to World number 1 without having won a major.

To be honest I have great difficulty in understanding a word that Tony Jacklin says. I suggest that sub-titles should be added to the TV screen when he starts his ramblings.

Jacklin was a bit too much of a snob for my liking.
He seemed to forget where he came from very quickly.

The Scottish country house and butler were just laughable.
He lost his money very quickly in the 1990 crash and never really recovered.
Hence Slazenger adverts.

Think I agree with most on here had respect for Jacklin as a golfer but have none now as a person.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this time he should of kept it to himself.
