Had to do a bit of shopping and got annoyed at the price of shower gel that means I’m easily paying over 100 a year just for that one item and my mind wandered to what we used before… a bar of soap!

Looked at it on the other shelf and good ones would only cost about 8 pounds to get a whole year’s supply, but who still uses soap bars? (well I’m switching back after seeing the price diff)

What do you still use that’s less popular/fashionable nowadays because its been replaced with something a lot more expensive/convenient that doesn’t actually do the job any better?

I’ve gone back to wet shaving with a safety razor. Maybe my whiskers have thickened, stiffened but I’ve found electric razors no longer give me a decent shave. I didn’t skimp and buy cheap electric razors, and I wasn’t shy when replacing blades.

A wet shave gives my a closer shave, the downside being the amount of times I draw blood.

I still use soap in the shower. Gruum do bars that you can also use on your hair so just like solid shower gel - no need to take multiple things into the shower.

2 things I can think I use that are less fashionable.

1) Cut throat razor, though I always have a beard, I use a vintage Cut throat for tidying up around the cheeks and under the neck. On the odd occasion I’m forced to shave for work (Once a year), I’ll trim the beard with clippers then use the cut throat for a full clean shave.

2) Not an item as such but a brand that’s very unfashionable with anyone under 60 😂. I use Old Spice deodorant sticks, it’s has a really good fresh smell, keeps you dry, doesn’t leave white patches on clothes and in stick form lasts ages so save money and waste on cans of spray.

I still use a blade on occasion, but I used to wet shave daily when I was working.
A couple of years ago I tried to buy a new styptic pencil for the times I drew blood. I couldn’t find one anywhere at the shops. I had to buy a pack of 3 online
I also use bars of soap, not for saving money, but I prefer it.

Prefer soap, but I like a strong smelling one, some of the old fashioned bars (coal tar, shield, imperial leather etc) are nowhere near as strong smelling as they were.

Get some nice ones from an Irish Company called “The Black Stuff” but it can be pricey.

I haven't bought any shower gel for years, every year somebody in my family (normally parents) buys us a set of Rituals foaming gels and whatnot. I've now got a backlog of about 8 of them to get through before I have to buy one. And I actually have a bath more often than I have showers these days.

Coal tar soap 🤮. Can’t stand the smell of that stuff, it’s all my dad would use just makes the place stink.
People should think about moving away from shower gels, all that plastic is not good for the environment.
I’ve been saying this to Mrs M for a while can I get her to buy into it though! Absolutely not, I’m keen to switch to a soap but I like to know what something smells like before I use it, but can’t find any decent soap stockists near where I live all the ones in Supermarkets locally are cheap crap.

You’d be OK with the modern one, the smell is nothing like you’d remember as a kid.😂😂

Vosene is another product that’s lost its smell, loved it as shampoo, always felt clean, now it’s no different.

My dad used it right up to the end so I’ve known that smell for 40 odd years even the new one was vile 😂

Used to love Vosene though it just smelt clean.

Saw some shower gel in the supermarket a few weeks ago and wondered if if was to wash with it or drink it - things like Cherry Spritz was one 'flavour'

My wife uses one called “To the moon and back “. By the same people that do imperial leather, it’s got a coconut flavouring in it. My wife hates coconut! Yet uses this shower gel regardless of that because and I quote “it’s got a cute name “ 😂

I have always used soap with the exceptions

When the daughter left home leaving the shower gel in in the bathroom.

When I go somewhere where it is supplied e.g. the golf club.

Been a soap user for years. I’ve always felt that shower gel never really gets you as clean.
I’m one of the lucky <2% of Europeans that are genetically programmed so that I cannot get BO so I don’t use deodorant, but I like to make sure I’m squeaky clean every day when I shower.

You’re not a (ex) member of the Royal household are you?
