Who is the better golfer?

They are the same, as the handicaps woudl suggest.

They have just taken very different ways of getting there.

A works harder but B has more natural ability. But to be a good golfer you need a little bit of both.

If B had lessons and A started using more forgiving equipment i'm sure they could both be lower than 10.

My 2p on the subject :D

A players handicap, in my eyes anyway, is a measure of a players ability on the course. The lower the handicap the higher the ability and vice versa.

So in my eyes both are of equal ability.... But that isn't the question.

The better golfer, for me is player A. For many of the reasons above, specifically Brendys' "crutch" point.

Or , to look at it another way.

Give both golfers the same equipment, who would score better?

I'd rather play and have equipment of Player A as he worked and persevered to become a better player when compared to B who seems to just be getting by and not pushing himself further. For me this makes A the better player

So you reckon if they both played with B's gear then A would be the better player, I'll disagree with you on that one

Some of the replies lead me to think some might be suggesting A because they view him as the more 'pure' untarnished golfer simply due to a more traditional club range

Care factor?????

They both play to the same handicap. End of discussion.

Offset driver, hybrids, offset irons and a chipper. Perhaps this natural ability is having thick skin rather than golfing prowess?

I'd say both.

Anyone who can play off 10 without lessons or practice has talent. This game isn't easy!!

Just to be awkward - B is the better player. I guess to play off 10, you would be looking to shape shots, which Player A with his kit will be able to do. Player B is stuck with playing straighter shots, and still plays off the same handicap. So B is the better golfer. If only I could find the winking eye emoticon!

it doesnt state that player B bought that gear to help with his game. he might just have bought it unawares or been given it. if he has managed to get to 10 this way then fair play to him and i think hes the better golfer. winky smile ;)

Maybe a touch of dogmatism showing through between the lines on this thread that could easily be interpreted as being due to the use of the 'C' word............. chipper!

I think Player A with more forgiving kit could get lower quickly.

I think Player B with less forgiving kit is more likely to go up first, then come down later if he learned to handle the blades etc.

Therefore right now I'd class Player A as the better player

o no you dit-ten ! not the c-word

i bought a c-word after the big debate on here as i was backing them up and have no problem using it if it worked. only problem was that it was far too lofted for my needs. chipping with it was impossible and too much loft for bump and runs. i would like one with say a 4-iron loft and a chipper bottom. i might make one in the garage someday out of an old club.

I tried a 'C' but for me its quite limited in needing a shot with a putting type of lie to use it, so lacked versatility from a fringe etc but when the ball lies well then its straight off the face all the time & heading for the pin!

Still say player B though (& he sounds a sight more fun to play a round with) :D
