Following on from the talent thread:

Two golfers, both playing off a 10 handicap.

Player A plays with a tour model driver with a 440cc head, in a traditional shape. He has a set of blades, 2 to sw, and a bladed putter. He has a nice looking swing that is the product of coaching and hard work on the practice ground.

Player B has a 460cc offset square headed driver, 3 hybrids, a set of offset irons with massive perimeter weighting in 5 to sw, a chipper, and a putter that wouldn't look out of place on Star Trek. He has never had lessons, does not practice, and has a swing that looks like an octopus falling out of a tree.

Which is the better golfer?

the handicap tells it all for me so IMO they are equal as the old adage goes "its not how its how many" so regardless of what kit you use its the score that counts.

Totally agree, not many tour players use the same equipment. It's all about putting it in the hole with the fewest strokes, as long as your equipment conforms to the rules why does it matter.

The question is who is the better golfer not who is the lowest handicap. Golfer A works hard and needs no help, he is a sportsman. Golfer B is talented but lazy and needs lots of help, he is not really a sportsman, he does not know how good he could be.

I know the question is not who is the sportsman :D

Murph, what was your thinking? Was the post to make the point that equipment is not relevant or that hard work counts or what?

Personally I though the aim of golf was to put the ball in the hole in the lowest number of strokes. I think for me there needs to be a definition of a "good golfer" in order to understand Murph's underlying question.
If the aim of the game is as above then both do it equally well.
Define what a good golfer is and it may make it clearer that we want to favour Golfer A for the purposes of the question.

I think if you were looking at both you would say A is the best golfer. But the handicap says they are the same.

Then again if you compare 2 10's one can only hit it 200 off the tee and the other bombs it 280 but the first guy has a super short game but thats where player B struggles which of them are the best.

i beg to differ. my friend has had around 10 lessons and his practice swings would not look out of place on the range at lytham & st annes, right up to the smooth finish in the follow through. i can tell you, a good looking swing does not maketh the golfer. he plays off 18 and boy does he need those shots.

I think question is looking to define what makes a "good golfer".

For me its A.
why? because he has the gear and a nice swing and works hard? the pro shops are full of guys like that.

the Q was "which is the BETTER golfer" and I stick by my slightly glib but accurate answer of the one who consistently goes round in the lower scores:smirk:

there is also the possibility that player B is holding himself back by playing some of the gear hes using. give him player A's equipment and im sure his game would improve after a period of time.

i can relate to your friend, a few times i have been asked if i was a single figure handicapper, purely because of how my swing looks, i tell them i play off 28 and there shocked, but soon see why when i hit the ball lol
