Which tees would you play from.

We can only play of the yellows on social regular golf - white are for comps only , I prefer it that way , comps are supposed to be tougher.

Same.

I had a quick 9 holes on my own after work the other day. Had the course to myself so for a bit of fun I played off the ladies/junior tees! Was great fun and the course obviously played totally differently. Loads of long irons off the tee so really helped sharpen up that part of my game.

Mostly whites for comp and social all year round but will go one forward if playing with someone else who doesn't use whites in a social game or if the comp dictates a different tee

Most courses have at least one or two even longer tees but I would never play from further back

As a side question I happen to have scorecards in the office from three different courses and just looking through them the distance difference between each set of tees is about 500 meters longer between each set

Is that a common gapping?

We always play white tees in social rounds. Personally, I'd welcome our club adopting a "yellow tees only" approach to non-competition golf, it can only help pace of play.

Never going to happen though!

do you play the senior comps off the yellows?

Yes Patrick we do and that is what I cannot get me head around. The lads that qualify for playing off the yellows which may help with a hcap reduction would sooner play off the whites.

Played off the back tees at Woburn, Marquess I think. My m8 was a 3 hcp and hits it miles and talked me into it. I'm not short off the tee but it just wan't fun hitting hybrids and 3w into most greens, even off a good drive. Kind of spoiled the day a bit for me.

Learned my lesson then and there, when we play championship courses and paying a lot for it, I'm playing off a tee that I can enjoy the round from.

And there in lies a problem, out of five par fours on the front it was driver and three wood. With the shortest being a driver and seven iron. The back nine I cannot reach any par fours with anything other than a driver and hybrid or three wood.
playing Tyneside was a joy as I could hit a good drive and and iron on a fair few holes.

Mate, get their head around being a senior and competing with fellow seniors off the yellows at times, they might be surprised by the standard, plus they can play off whites in Club Comps, regardless of colour, they still need to hit the shots.

Would like to see choice for tee's for everyone, a corresponding SSS for each would work. The game should be enjoyable and playing off daft tee's compared to ones ability is madness. Our seniors almost exclusively play off the yellows and have new found enjoyment for the game - suggest otherwise, sure, but run like hell to avoid being run over by motorised trolleys.

The issue is SSS. Our Whites are par 72 SSS 72 and the Yellows are Par 72 SSS 70. Thus if you are playing off the yellows in a senior comp you have to play 2 shots better than your handicap to play to your handicap.

All the par 4s are reachable off the whites so you end up hitting 3 woods or rescues off many of the yellows vs driver or 3 woods.

Much prefer the extra 2 shot SSS by playing off the whites.

Also favours lower handicappers in matchplay.

All 3 clubs I've been a member at have had a policy of White Tee =Comp only, Yellow Tee for everything else.
A bit annoying really, although at my last club there was only about 80 yards between total yardage of White and yellows
At the Zoo there is 300 yards difference but not often enough to change your Tee shot, except the par 3s - and then only really one that goes from 165-197...the others might change from a 7 to a 6 for instance.
On an away day I'd be led by the club.
If they stipulate a Tee of the Day then that's it
If not then the ability of the players needs to be taken into account.

At Salisbury I play off both, they don't mind you using the White tees for general play.

Rushmore don't like you using Whites unless in a comp, but in saying that they will turn a blind eye as long as the course isn't to busy.

like wise, off the yellow at mine its par 71 SSS 71, but of the whites its par 71 sss 73, a few different angles from the white and a bout 400 yards, but a better course off the white IMO

This country needs to have three sets of tees as a minimum.

Forward for anyone who wants to play with less challenging carries across rough, water etc.

Standard for casual games of competent golfers.

Back for competitions, use should be restricted but not outlawed.

White as much as pos. Nothing worse than playing a shorter course to then go back in comp. For me personally I want to play the course I pay for not a shortened version. Dunbar is no problem off the whites. Royal Musselburgh is farcical at times putting tees 40 yrds forward so I hit a shot roughly to where I would hit if I was off the whites.

One of the contributors to slow play in my opinion. Old boys (often good golfers) who have no chance of GIR from the whites so already built in is the need for an extra shot per hole.

It's right up there with male pride, not giving into graphite shafts or softer shafts etc. See it every weekend.

Mmm some of the OLD BOYS play much faster then the YOUNG guys who watch too much TV and think they are much better than they really are. See it everyday.

Ill start on the whites.. top it to the yellows then land on the reds and play from there.....
