In March of next year Tashyboy will be 55 years young. Three of my PPs are already above 55. Every game we have at out place whether it is a comp or not is off the whites pots.
I have asked my PPs why they do not play from the yellows. They say they have always played off the whites and are happy to continue doing that. In the summer when the Q comps are on, the differance between some of the white and yellows pots can be as much as fifty yards.
We all strive to lower our hcaps and surely playing off the yellows would help this.
It would mean playing in the senior comps as against the regular members but is that an issue.
Thoughts please.

Don't have that issue

White tees are for comps only

Yellow tees are for casual golf

Only a few courses in my area operate differently
If you play white tees all of the time, then surely your comp days wont feel 'special' or anything but just another game of golf....

I only ever play off whites in competitions, yellows at all other times. I kind of thought it was frowned upon to use the white tees when not in a comp - is that wrong?

One of the contributors to slow play in my opinion. Old boys (often good golfers) who have no chance of GIR from the whites so already built in is the need for an extra shot per hole.

It's right up there with male pride, not giving into graphite shafts or softer shafts etc. See it every weekend.

I play off the whites once they go out at the beginning of April, to when when we go off them and on to winter tees in November

if you are playing for your handicap off the whites, it helps playing off those all the time.

I know a lot of clubs don't let you play from the medal tee's down there , but up here, there are only a couple of clubs that don't.

for me whites all the time and that goes for playing other courses as well, within reason

Always white tees for me. My club doesn't mind which we play from, so seems silly not to play casual rounds, which are also effectively practice rounds from the same place as I will play in competitions.

Otherwise it would make competition golf feel more difficult as well as that added bit of pressure.

That said, there doesn't tend to be a massive difference between the yellows and whites on non competition days, and even on competition days there are only a couple of holes where the difference is notable.

If there were a very big difference in distance then I could see it being an issue from a pace of play perspective with some playing yellows and some playing whites, in which case a rule to say only yellows for casual rounds, or putting the whites near the yellows, makes sense.

A previous club of mine had the whites / comps only rule. It made competitions scary as the tees were very different. Hated playing comps then. Clubs I've been in since have allowed any tees and I have deliberately played off the whites so that comps were no longer a big scary thing. Yardage differences are no longer a shock.

If I go to other clubs to play I look at the card and see the yardage. If the course is long I will happily play off the yellows, I may even play some holes on whites, others on yellows. I'm not a long hitter and I don't have an ego on that front. Play what you are comfortable with, forget your pride.

Whites are comp only for us, but on Saturdays the whites are moved back as far as possible (normally on separate tee boxes) whereas during the week they are normally on the same tee box as the greens just further back. So really where the whites are during the week never gets played as you arent meant to use them and then they get moved for Saturday.

We have the option of playing off whites or yellows in the summer and it doesn't affect the pace of play too much. This year, as an experiment, we have introduced a monthly Seniors Competition playing from the forward (Red) tees which seems to be proving popular as most senior members find 7,000+ yards too much. This shortened course is SSS 69 and counts for CONGU handicap purposes.

do you play the senior comps off the yellows?

How many of the par 4s can you not reach in two under normal conditions? If its quite a few I would consider playing from the yellows mainly.

At our place its strange because its easier to score on from the whites due to the par being 2 higher and so is SSS. A 195 par 3 becomes a 240 par 4 and a a 445 yard really really tight par 4 becomes a 485 yard par 5.

Play off the whites providing you don't hold others up and it doesn't make it too difficult that you can't enjoy the round.

I'll mostly play off the whites in the summer as it's good practice for our comps, but I will sometimes go off the yellows to change things up a bit. There's quite a bit of a gap between our whites and yellows so in the summer it makes the course much easier (in theory). Also good for the confidence shooting a good score, even if it is off the yellows :D

We have 4 tees, blue championship tees are used rarely and only for specific comps, we use white tees for most comps and we play off these for most knock about games too. Yellow is mens tee and red is ladies. However sometimes it's nice going off the yellows too, just because it makes a change from driver, Wood to play Driver 7 iron to a green :D

Normally play from Yellow. Never really understood the need for ams to have a different comp tee, ladies do not generally so why men(I suppose due to historical reasons).

Personally I think it should be on ability and distance you hit the ball. I find a par 72 course a long slog if it is say 6500 yards or more(especially in pre summer conditions), just for ever hitting a big club into greens and got to hit your best shot.

Played off the back tees at Woburn, Marquess I think. My m8 was a 3 hcp and hits it miles and talked me into it. I'm not short off the tee but it just wan't fun hitting hybrids and 3w into most greens, even off a good drive. Kind of spoiled the day a bit for me.

Learned my lesson then and there, when we play championship courses and paying a lot for it, I'm playing off a tee that I can enjoy the round from.

Couldn't have put it better myself. If a hole is designed to be played into with a short iron you should play from a tee that gives you that shot, provided you hit a good drive. I hate playing great courses & having to hit 3 woods into the par fours.

I'll take the lead from the course....but at my home club, if there are whites out then I'll play from the whites. If I'm playing elsewhere then I'll take their guidance on the tee of the day.

We can only play of the yellows on social regular golf - white are for comps only , I prefer it that way , comps are supposed to be tougher.

But I also do enjoy when I play at Woburn and play of the whites or even blues which is a test I enjoy as well.

Yellows , whites are for comps / knockouts only. Makes a bit of difference, upto 3 clubs on some holes, but I don't mind. I think the par 3 white tee's would be ruined with divots if everyone went off the whites.
