Which St Andrews Course to play alongside the old

Is it still that way (bad)?

I've certainly heard from (several) folk whose opinion I respect that it was particularly daft when it first opened, but that subsequent changes have moderated their 'stupid greens' opinion somewhat.

Maybe it's the one to go for just to find out?

The slopes and undulations have been softened, I played it last year and agree there are greens with a lot of undulations but none I would say were silly. Play to the right part of the green and you'll have no problems ;)

I was the same saw Kingsbarns on TV (Dunhill) and was really looking forward to it. Was a little disappointed. Not as good as Castle Stuart. Jim had a deal and was pretty cheap compared to what they charge the rest of the time. Def would not pay full whack.

I've played Kingsbarns five times now, in various weather conditions from rubbish to spectacular and off different tees so feel bad for saying it but I don't think it's as good as its portayed, it has a few too many weak and unmemorable holes considering its setting and asking price.

its not that i wouldn't play it again Jim, just would not pay what they were asking and def play off the further back tee's. the ones we played off that day were mickey mouse and i don't think it helped, even though it was very windy that day.

Yeah, I know :) I was just saying I have been back numerous times since then and I still feel the same. I expected to get more from the course the more I played it but my initial impression hasn't changed a great deal.

Nice to read the praise for the Jubilee on here. Sounding like a tough test!

will be a nice warm up for the old course the next day :whoo:

I can't remember all the hole numbers but there is an uphill hole on the back 9 that has a lower section at the back of the green and that is were the pin was when I played it. I tried a putt from the middle of the green down to that level and the ball rolled off the green every time. Also, the 17th slopes so severely from left to right that it is pointless putting the flag anywhere on the left hand side of the green.

Shame really as it does have some spectacular holes.

Have you played Castle Stuart yet, same guy, but got it right there and you can def see the similarities.

First time i played that, i was a bit Eurr, but now i have played it lots prob close 100 times now... its starting to grow in me ;)

Not to hijack the tread but can anyone confirm which tees would you be expected to play on the Old? Is it your preference between yellow and white or is it prescribed?
