I am looking at doing the advance booking for the old course but am undecided on which course to book alongside it.

Is one of the other courses heads and tails above the rest?
Is one course a good complement to the old?
Perhaps there is one course quirkier than the rest and just good fun?
Or should I just pick the cheapest and save my money for another day like North Bewick?

What would you recommend?

Thanks

I played The Jubilee with The Old Course and it's excellent, really good test.

The Eden runs parallel to the Old Course and my favourite of the Trust courses.

If you go through the town and up the hill to the Fairmont there are two splendid courses, The Torrance and The Kittocks, both around 7000 yards with great views over St Andrews and the sea.

The Castle course there is one of my favourite courses and is fairly different to the others that are there. It is situated near the Fairmont but is still run by the St. Andrews links. The course has great views of St. Andrews too

The New Course is brilliant and I'd go for the Castle as well which is also great and as said before, quite different from the links courses.
Outside St Andrews Leven and Lundin Links are a superb double.

The locals rate the New Course more highly than the Old Course, and it is normally easy to get on to.

I agree but if you've never played at St Andrews driving off the first and playing into the last at the Old Course is definitely a special moment in any golfers life.

But isn't that normal with the Open courses, normally there is somewhere a lot better near that just doesn't have the infrastructure to host an event like that. I know the Fife area is full of them.

I think with St Andrews it's more the history than the infrastructure that they choose the Old Course over the others.

The New and the Jubilee are the 2 most highly rated along with the Old. I always enjoy the Eden, some really interesting holes particularly on the front 9.

Avoid the Castle course, it's a joke! Not quite sure how you are meant to putt on greens with 6ft tiers on them

That's quite an exaggeration isn't it? The Castle course has more contours both on and off the green, but I think it makes a more challenging and exciting golf course than the others. I suppose if you are player who struggles to get a lot of carry/height on the ball then it may not be the course for you. However every time I play it reasonably well I get a lot of enjoyment from doing so.

You won't be disappointed with either of the New or The Jubilee, both very good golf courses with the Jubilee being the tougher test of the two.

I have not played the Castle but I would say either the New or the Jubilee, the Eden is good and very tough in the wind, but there are a few holes that let it down.
