Which Golf

I have a 64 plate Golf se 1.4 match DSG.
It’s the best car I have owned .
It’s got everything you could want on it.
Not a thing has gone wrong on it , and the build quality is fantastic.
Just bought a t-roc and it’s not a patch on the golf , I drive the golf all the time it does exactly what it should do in some style.

We saw the t-roc in the showroom and were wondering - so useful to hear your view on it, and of course on your Golf. And sounds pretty much the model level we are looking for? Also is the DSG the automatic?

Mentioned the Corolla last night and got very short shrift. Will try her on the Subaru Impreza - but think I'll get a similar response...especially as she has already this morning been looking on-line at used Golfs...

Yes the DSG is the double clutch auto it’s great gearbox.
There is a t roc forum I am on ,sorry can’t do links,
It’s a very nice car but nowhere near as nice as the golf to drive.
Only got it for the wife ,she has Arthritis and struggles with getting in and out.

The higher seat was one reason MrsH looked at the t-roc. Also for getting my 88yr old MiL in and out. But feel the Golf is still the one for her. Lots of 2-3yr old diesels out there...

Ok the t roc is a very nice car but VW have gone to town on cost cutting .
Hard plastics on dash and doors look nice but very easily marked.
Mine a DSG also 1.5 petrol nice combo.
The stop start system is a disaster as it shuts the engine down while the car is still moving under 4mph.
So coming to a junction or roundabout is uncomfortable when the engine fires and the car lunges.
Asked the tech at VW to adjust it for me “I can’t “ was his answer.
I just turn it off now.

Only for the ride height for hid I would have got an E golf full electric and wish I had now.
You can’t go wrong with a golf,
Have you looked at a golf + not sure if they still make them , it was a golf but just on a higher platform.
They were deffo around in 2014 when I bought my golf.

I know it's still within the group, but a Skoda Yeti would be a very good option. I htink they have stopped making it now, so it would be a youngish car at best.
As far as DSG boxes go, VW group use 2 types. A dry clutch, and a wet clutch version. It would appear the wet clutch version is used with higher output/torque engines. The wet clutch ones are supposedly smoother (I know my van 'box is) BUT they must have an oil change every 40k miles, and is a very specific process. We have one go on a VW Transporter van at 90k miles, for which VW Germany supplied the box FOC and VW UK covered the fitting only because we had the gearbox oil change at the 40k intervals on their records. Without it we would have been looking at about £6-7k for a new box fitted, as they are apparently not serviceable and are very electronic.

Interesting - and as we have always been manual drivers will most probably keep me away from automats. Not sure about the Petrol/Diesel side of things though.

I was say it's mileage dependant. I love diesels for their torque, but unless your going to do lots of miles stick with petrol. If you do go for a diesel, make sure it is Euro 6 and nothing older.
The financial penalties for not being Euro 6 can be quite horrendous from local authorities. For example the London ULEZ charge will be pushed out to the north and south circulars in a year or 2 max, and currently is £12.50 a day. Westminster Council has just put a 50% surcharge on all diesel non Euro 6 parking on street meter parking (all done by pay by phone). Like sheep, once one authority does it the rest will follow.

I had a knee injury years ago and borrowed my brothers automatic.
I went straight out and traded mine for an auto that was twenty years ago and I would never go back to manual.

This, do a lot of town driving and would never consider a manual (but equally would never consider an auto box on a motorcycle, go figure) and most modern auto boxes have a manual option if you want to play.

Yes mine has a tiptronic box but I never use it.
My wife had a Yaris with a 1.0 litre engine tiptronic auto that had paddles on the steering wheel.
It would not pull you out of bed with or without paddles

Rather like my wife's Honda Jazz with a 7 speed auto with flappy paddles; 0 - 60 by next Tuesday, absolute waste of time on that car.

For a decent nick, lower mileage second hand Golf (2/3 years old) you're lookin
Mrs Hogie is pretty much set on a used VW golf.

She is not really a 'car person' - just likes a half decent car with a reasonable spec. Having done a drivers speed awareness course a couple of years back she is diligent/paranoid about keeping to speed limits, and so is not at all interested in 'speed' and 'acceleration' - but if they come as part of a decent package then that's OK.

Why a VW Golf? Simply our experience of VW cars is one of 'solid reliability'. She is not too bothered about 'holding value for resale' as her thinking is that she'll have this car for a good while - basically keeping it for as long as it isn't costing as a load of £££s to maintain and run.

Something maybe 2 or 3 years old.

Any ideas on any models we could look at? Or indeed any suggestions for directly comparable vehicles we might investigate?

For a decent nick, lower mileage second hand Golf (2/3 years old) you're looking at what? £12k-£15k depending on the spec? Just have a look about on Autotrader for cars around that valuation and you'll get loads of ideas for potential alternatives, especially given the build quality issues and cost cutting measures that others have mentioned that the VW group have gone through in recent years.

The likes of Kia are a great shout, as are Toyota's range if you're looking at great build quality and not paying too much of an excess for a badge - I'm looking at you, BMW, Audi, Mercedes ...

Almost wish I never asked about Golfs but still glad I did - given the warning flags being raised by quite a few here about build quality...

Now I wonder if I can get MtrsH along to the local Toyota dealership...

I don't know enough about cars to trust myself to buy something privately and so never have done. For me a car's a car's a car - something for getting me from A to B in comfort. And as I've always just had lease cars through whatever company I've been with, I've really not had to bother about reliability, servicing etc

I have had four golfs and the build quality has been excellent.
My comment on this was aimed at my t roc which is nowhere near as good .
So I think pre 64 reg will be ok but can’t comment after that.

All car oems have their faults but limiting herself to one car is silly ,you must get her to go and see the massive choice on offer .
Was in a new Fiesta today ,that’s a really nice car !

I'll let you tell my Mrs that she's being silly...;)

In her head she totally trusts VW. The old S reg Golf we had was excellent - as have been two Polos currently in the family (one 08 the other 15)

I used to be the same, having had a C reg Polo (mini Volvo estate) the E reg Jetta 9built like a tank and youo felt so safe in it), thenon to diesel and an L reg Vento (liked it, but was never a patch on the Jetta) then S reg Skoda Octvy estate, then O3 reg Superb (gorgeous car and engine) now after diesel gate and the whole VW deciept on diesels it's back to petrol and a (gorgeous) Mazda 3.
I can see where they have cut corners to save money since diesel gate cost them hundreds of millions.
The older cars are true VW quality, and are miles better than the current offering quality of build wise.

I take it she dosnt watch the news then ,with the diesel scandal.
The golf is a great choice but is a bit silly to rule everything else out.
But who can fathom them, if that’s what she wants

I am brand loyal myself but as I said a bit disappointed with the t roc.
