I regularly hit between 88 and 95 does the type of golf ball make a difference to me?

I cannot profess to know the difference but i do not like playing with Callaway's they seem to soft and prefer Pro-v's but do they make a difference. Apart from not liking callaways i am not sure i could tell another ball from a pro'v or get it to stop or do anything different?

Is it like a lot of things in golf there is a snobbery attached to which ball to use? Or is it when you start to lower your score you notice the difference?

I heard today on talk sport things woosie and tiger had been seen doing at exibitions with a golf ball and it frightened me how far away i am from achieving any of that will the ball make any difference?

I am staggered that you find Callaways too soft. They are generally the hardest ball out there by far.

If you are regularly shooting in the 90s, I can't see it making much difference.

ProV1s and such will slice and hook more than others, as they are high spinning balls. If you don't hit it reasonably straight, or with reasonable control, you will lose alot of them. If you can't stop a proV, you are not hitting it properly, and will derive no benefit from it.

A good solid ball would be AD333, or Titleist NXT, or similar. These are good alround balls.

Don't be conned into thinking you have to go down the most expensive route, and yes, there is alot of snobbery in ball choice, which leads to guys playing unsuitable balls.

Probably depends on your ball striking. If you hitting the ball cleanly every time it probably will make a difference. If not I wouldn’t worry about it yet. I didn’t really notice the feel of the ball till I was down to 11 or 12 handicap. Was playing a couple of balls one night noticed the Callaway HX hot wasn’t stopping but the Pro V was. That was a bit of a light bulb moment for me!

PS For driver clubhead speed 85-90 mph and above the AD333 are a good mid priced ball, 80mph and below that and I think the Srixon Soft Feel are as good as any.

I'm now officially a Srixon AD333 guy. They seem to give me the control, feel and distance that suits me and I really like the Srixon logo :D I'm a mid-handicapper, but hoping to get down to low-teens by the start of next season once I join my new club this weekend and can start playing more regularly.

Yes I'd have to agree, I've been trying out the Callaway Tour i(x/z/s/whatever) recently, I like them because they seem more stable (ie straighter) into a headwind, something to do with the half dozen deep dimples they have, certainly easier to hit than a ProV1. I don't notice much difference off the club face in terms of hard/softness to be honest, except when it comes to putting, the Callaways make a distinct, hard click off the face of the putter which I don't find with any other reasonable ball.

I find the Callaways tend to be a little harder to get hold of though, a lot of smaller pro shops don't stock them. Given that I'll only play a ProV1 if I've found it the other alternative I've been using is the Srixon Z-Star, the last few times that I've got a ball to back up it's been a Z-Star, they even stop pretty much dead with longer irons as well (I've had a couple of 4 irons check sideways or even bounce backwards and stop recently and they were both using Z-Stars). I don't mind using an AD333, although you have to modify your long chips and pitch shots to allow for the fact that it won't check on the second bounce like any of the others I've mentioned will.

I've also tried the Bridgestone R330 a few times, they aren't bad, again, not the easiest to get hold of though.

I guess it depends if you're making you way down into the 90s or back up into them, like I am! In that case it's not because your ball-striking is no good it's because I'm a tw@t...

Yes that's exactly why I don't use them, it's not so bad on a calm day, but chuck a headwind in and they're a waste of time for me.

I’m officially a not Ad333 guy.

I got a box, the first decent golf ball I had purchased at that stage exactly 4 1/2 years ago when I first started. I lost every one of them, in about 12 shots (lost ball per shot).

Have avoided them ever since, but that’s just me!

Think there may have been some in my range bag, or may have shanked them on the range last week and lost them too

DX3 or DX2 wilson staffs.

PLaying with DX3 at the moment for that bit more spin and stop into greens, but another month when the greens are softer ill be swapping back to DX2 for the winter.

Great balls very cheap and very very under estimated.

Check out the review forum as i done a back to back review against some of the premier balls like prov1 and penta's

Good Lord, imagine if it was your fault and not the ball's ;)

I'd suggest you just try a load of different balls (fortunately you can get most of them in packs of 3), some will feel nice on impact, some better than others for chipping/putting, in your price range etc.

I don't think that you can rate a ball by the quality of the golfer. But by that players preferences and playing style.

Personally I like Pro V1X's. They are nice and soft for the short game, not too spinny for the long game, go far enough but stop on the greens.

I mainly buy them from winnings/vouchers in the pro shop so they are "free".

Thanks. Plenty of advice there i don't notice any of the things you guys are talking about which worries me more. I do still feel when i hit a callaway it has a different feel to it than most balls but to be honest i didn't realise balls made such a huge difference and i do slice the ball so probably a pro v1 is not the ideal ball for me.

My 2p worth.

I use the Dunlop Loco M.A.D. balls, brought a few packs when they were £6 for 15 balls from a well known Direct Sports place…

My best round to date is a 101 on a par 72 course – my usual score is anywhere between that and a 120 (Recently took up the game). The way I see it is as I’m still learning I’ll lose a fair few golf balls so these allow me to play freely and not to worry about losing any.

I’ve a pack of the AD333’s back in my garage and when I’m less erratic with my shots I’ll consider using them – but for the minute cheap and cheerful Dunlops do the trick just fine.

I love the Pro V1's. Great feel and added distance to a soft ball. Around the green and on chip shots they feel good and stop well.
The other I like are the Srixon soft feel balls. For about £14 a dozen I think they're probably the best value for money ball out there. They play good off the tee and are great around the greens.

i like the pro v1x great ball love the feel and everything about it. I would use it all time if they were free:) lol. I also like the nxt tour. Great and half the price:)

Wilson Staff DX3's.
Great ball.

Completely agree......
I started off playing with wilsons DX2's and 3's and iv gone back to them again.......
Tried Pro V's, Srixons, TM's........
I still keep going back to the wilsons.......They do generate enough spin despite what some might say......

To be honest how many Mid Or High handicappers shoot 10 to 15 feet past the flag all the time expecting the ball to select reverse......Very little id say.....I know i dont which is why i play a ball within my game.......

The wilson Dx2's still spin a little off the short irons enough to check them up if needed on short shots and on full shots they hop and stop for me......

The Dx3's have a little more spin than these again and to be honest both balls hold there line very well into the wind and im not sure if its just me but they seem to roll better from the putter......There plenty straight off the longer clubs and are certainly longer than tour balls......

I love using soft balls for chipping and putting and its going to take a strong candidate to get me away from my wilsons again :D

I've been using the last of the freebie Cally tour Ix I got and they are pretty good now the greens have softened. They are much firmer off the putter and wedges than a Pro V and I like that. I've also been using up some old TM TP red and blacks which I've found are the best balls for windy days.

Of all the premium balls though the Bridgestone B330 RSx are the my favourite. Cheaper than most they spin as well as the Pro V and have a good feeling of both the driver and the shorter clubs with a decent amount of stop with irons into the greens. Definitely a bit of a sleeper in terms of knowing they are about but definitely worth a look. On the other side of the coin I hate the Penta. Way too soft, I lost about 5-10 yards (and I'm a short hitter anyway and so can't afford to be dropping anymore) and felt very porridgy with wedge and putter. I couldn't see what the fuss was about. I did get excited about trying them when they first came out (like most new stuff) but it only took a few rounds to see I wasn't getting any benefit
