Hi
I have recently taken up golf in the last 3 months and am roughly playing off about 20. I am using graphite shafted Dunlop max golf clubs however I want to get a better set of steel clubs second hand from eBay however I really don't know where to start. I understand that custom fitted would be best however as I can only afford to spend between £150- £250 that isn't going to be possible. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good set of clubs which would suit my price range and ability? I realise this may be like asking 'how long is a piece of string.' But any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated!

thanks everyone.

The Ping G range are very forgiving and might suit you. You can do a static fitting on their web site which gives a good guide as to the lie required (Ping colour code their irons when custom fit). I think you'd get a set of G10 clubs for the money you're looking to spend.

Anything from the Ping "G" range or anything from the Callaway "X" range.
Also Cleveland CG7 or TaylorMade Burner ranges.
EBay is an option but you do have to be careful
Golfbidder is as safe as houses but more expensive - 4-pw Cally X-20 in fair condition are £183 for example..Pings tend to be a touch more(£200)...Clevelands a bit less.(£170).

Hello & welcome aboard,
Every answer will be different based on our own experiences,

Personally i'd look at the mizuno mx range. cleveland Ta's, and callaway x-range

Good luck with your search for the holy grail.

A guy I play with sometimes was in the exact same situation and got a set of ping G10s inc woods and driver. Perfect for him and he could find the right fit dot too.

I had a go and they were nice, I nailed the driver!

I got my MX 23 Mizuno to £85 and customised them to my own spec. They are the best, easiest to hit clubs I've ever had. Absolutely no need to pay more.

My last set were Callaway Diablo, suited according to the original blurb, to mid handicap and were pretty forgiving.

Pretty sure they sit slap-dab in the middle of your budget if you can find them.

These or the slightly later MX25s is my recommendations.

And even when you improve, they will still be great clubs that can be used effectively! I know a 2-capper (he was a 4-capper when he made the statement) who stated that he'd got his as a 22-capper and they'd got him to 4, so saw no need to change!

Cleveland are great value for money and very underrated. The cg7, 16's and the 588tt and mt's are all great performers in your budget and still quite recent.

I would be going to American Golf and trying out the irons they have second hand to at least get an idea. Preferably one with a range so you can see the ball flight. You may pay a touch more but for me paying 250 and knowing that they work for me beats taking a risk at 200.

Just been custom fitted for the Celevland 588's and at only £349 it's not too much more on top to get a brand new set. In my fitting there was no difference in stats between these and the TM RSi's! I see direct golf are doing 5-PW for £299!
