When to learn how to draw and fade?

I've been playing for nearly 3 years now and play off 22 with friends. I practice loads at the range and play once, sometimes twice a week. Question is I would love to be able to hit draw and fade shots but should I wait until I can properly hit a straight shot? I've also heard that some poeple find it easier to draw / fade shots than to hit straight, any truth in that? When did others out there start to experiment with different shots or do you think it's best not to learn to run before I can walk so to speak.

The straight shot is the hardest to hit.
If you generally fade or draw the ball then stick with that.
Everyone needs a "stock" shot, the one that more often than not goes where it's supposed to. With my irons it's a gentle draw or straight flight so I know if I aim between the right edge of the green and the flag I "should" be there or thereabouts.
Knowing how your ball behaves in the air will help you to get more consistent.
Once you get confident of your ability, that's when I'd start to "work" the ball either way.

The problem is I havn't got a totally consistant shot, I always try and hit it straight but it doesn't always go left or right. It is getting better but it's a long slow process. I guess I'm like a lot of others, I want to get better quicker than my body will let me.

Then pick a fade, or draw, what ever you find easiest, and make it a stock shot. Stop trying to go straight, it will always be unpredictable.

Sounds like it's got to be worth a try, your right about the unpredictability! So, it's back to the range to practise hitting it in a curve.

One day you may be drawing it, the next fading it, learn to play with what your doing on the day. For me it'd down to how i'm timing it. No day is the same.
