When to get custom fitted

Just want to get peoples opinion on custom fitting.

I'm a high handicapper yet to break 100 normally round 101 - 105. I've started to have lessons this year but we've just focused on irons so far to try and get me to use my hips more I'm currently all arm.

Got the big three zero coming up so the Mrs has asked me what I'd like and was toying with getting fit for a driver. Currently have a Ping G15 & Taylormade Burner both 10.5 with regular shaft and generally my bad shot is far too high or pushed to the right.

Question is would a custom fit driver be any benefit if my swings still developing? Really like the look of the Titleist D910 or D913 D3 and with it been adjustable wondered if it might be a good option if my swing does change slightly.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't bother with the driver fitting to be honest mate. Work on the swing and the problem because the Ping and the TM are both solid drivers. Getting a new fitted Titleist isn't going to solve your problem at all. Probably not what you wanted to hear but it's true.

I'd recommend investing in a few lessons, I know it massively benefited me. Good luck with whatever you decide buddy.

(p.s. I'm kind of in the same boat with the 30th approaching - Mrs got me a putter fitting, which was good until the putter chipped!)

I'm in a similar situation and am currently getting my clubs retro-fitted, but I'm also having lessons. The initial fitting session was 3 hours and I have another short session booked tomorrow to finish off, after which I'll have final recommendations and quote for work required. Cost of the fitting was only £30, so thought I'd see what he comes up with.

I got some great tips on my swing during the process too.

I got fitted for a putter just before the start of last season. I played off 18.

I got fitted for a full set of irons and wedges and had a "semi shaft fitting" at the start of this year. Currently playing off 16.

I got re-fitted for my putter after a mass of changes to posture and stroke Wednesday just gone.

Does this answer your question? I hope not.

Being a high handicapper you would do far better working on your swing and spending your money on lessons with a good pro. Leran the basics and work from there.

Out of interest, where did you go for your retro-fitting. I've been considering going through the same process...

you don't need a fitting or a new driver. You need lessons. Asked my pro the same question just yesterday and he said he would be doing me a major disservice if he fitted me for and sold me a new driver before doing a bit of work with what I have. If you have the swing your drivers are plenty good enough.

I have never been custom fitted for anything and I am a relatively good player. Custom fit is mostly just marketing as long as you are not very tall/short/strong/old etc. Not only that but I bet I could hit your current driver long and straight.

Don't kid yourself that a change in club will make a difference. It won't. You just need to be a better golfer.

Thanks for all the replies, its what I thought deep down but like other peoples views.

Covered on the lesson front for the year thanks to the Mrs for Christmas and definitely seeing the benefit of them after the first few. Just need to remember to put what I learn into practice on the course and not just the range which is proving easier said than done.

I wouldn't get custom fit yet if I were you. Technically it can't hurt, but if you're changing your swing then it'd probably be a waste as they'd be ill-fitting again soon after.

I know that frustration of not quite breaking 100 well and fully understand you want to do what you can to break it as soon as possible. Course management, some lessons and plenty of practice will have you into double digits in no time.

Rather than go for a fitting and having a set of clubs made to spec, you take your off the shelf clubs and have them altered to suit you.

how much does this cost then, if you wanted say plus half and inch and have the lie changed? i may well look into this!

Get the Mrs to buy a block of lessons and a playing lesson. Your game will get more out of it. Once you have a more consistant action you can look at a fitting then. Until then I don't think you'll get the most out of the process
