Currently watching the PGA tour on sky and the current leader Kyle Stanley was 6 shots clear and started playing a bit ropey.

Now, his drives have been going left and right, anywhere but straight. So my question is why do they never switch to a wood or rescue, especially when they are on holes they can play into with a 7 iron if they take a wood.

Surely being in good position is better than playing out of thick rough where spin is impossible? If my driver is going off line I will switch the 3 wood straight away until a wider fairway is available.

Answers on a postcard!

I never change to an alternative - If driver is the club- I use it. If i'm having a mare with it I stick with it.

Woods used to be the best part of my game, but since i've started playing again after a 3 year break i just cannot get to grips with them.My home course is short but very tight and i've not needed any woods in the bag,but after getting earache from my Texas Scramble team mates last month,i decided to dust the driver and 3 wood off and try again.Just cannot seem to hit them and i'm obviously going to struggle when i visit longer course's.

if the driver leaves town, for more than 3 on the bounce, it stays in the bag for a few holes and i slap the 3w for a few holes to build a bit of faith in teh swing... always works.

My Drives are very good at the moment but im also hoping the RBZ Driver is going to be my next purchase and ill gain a few yards on the Ben Ross without doubt.

When it does go wrong I just stick with it now because the last time I took it out I was left with a Dunlop rescue #4 which went 200 yards of the tee with a great shot so I was always fighting the course for distance :-( still trying to get to grips with the TM Rescue so wont use that over the driver YET.

I would initially review the flight, angle and distance of the shot before changing to another club.

Its not good making rash decisions with regards to clubs as it hinders the confidence and can permeate through your whole bag.

Ash!!

Clearly you are still realtively new and won't have endured the slow torture I inflicted on the forum when I was looking at the R11 irons. Kept trying different irons (9 iron, 6 iron, 4 iron) in different shafts. Should I shouldn't I. Must have bored them to tears more than I usually do but I made sure I got them because they offered something better than what I had
