When everything else fails...

Dont have a goto club. If I have a club, normally a wood I cant use. One set to open or close. Its not in the bag, replaced with a club I can use. So I know, I can use all the clubs in the bag. If on any day (read most days) I am making a mess of it. Its me not the clubs. I need to sort ME out not the clubs. Maybe thats why I'm rubbish with all of them!!!!

It probably is but having a "good" club actually creates negative thoughts. Imagine your walking up to your approach and your thinking "great i can hit my 8i here", and then you get to your ball and you're a bit further away than you thought or the wind picks up and you have to hit a 7 or 6i but all the time your wishing you could hit your 8. That surely puts a negative thought into hitting the 7 or 6?

I like to think I can hit the required shot with the club that is needed and if I mess it up it's because I put a bad swing on it. I don't want to be standing over a shot wishing I could hit my "good" club. No-one has a club that they hit well every shot.

The scenarios you outline are not ones I've ever encountered, so I think the way I perceive the idea of a good club is different to yours. We're probably going round in circles here and I want my lunch ;)

Sorry Monty but I can't see how you've never had to change clubs because of a change in wind, the pin placement etc. If not then you must either be very bullish with yoru club selection and once you've got it in your head nothing will change that or a hit it whatever kinda guy.

I'm with hawkeye on this. I've 14 go to clubs and don't have a favourite. On my day they are as capable of hitting it exactly as I want or sending it into a different time zone. It isn't the club but user error when it goes wrong. There is nothing to say having a favourite 7 or 8 iron is going to make me put a better or worse swing on it

3 iron and 4 wood
trouble is thats a big gap inbetween them with a 3 iron at 205 and the 4 wood at 255 ish

Sorry, you have completely lost me. Where you get that interpretation of my posts from, i do not know. I dont know what they put in the water at royal ascot but you guys clearly think a lot. You've taken a few replies about what my favourite club is, and traduced any possible meaning into something that is not my view. Let's leave it.

When I get within 50 yards of the green, I do go the putter sometimes as I know I can't shank it.;)

You haven't had a proper bout of shanks yet. I had 3 months of it last year and, with the exception of the driver, managed to shank every other club in the bag at one time or another - including chipper and putter.

Unfortunately I have had the shanks for years, and did get a chipper which worked for a while, and then I started shanking that as well. My whole swing is basically now a big spasm, even more so with the shorter shots, but for some reason I have never had the problem with the putter. When I stand over the ball the shot I visualize is a socket.

OK. We'll call it a draw as the biggest shankers on the forum.

To me it is a simple question, as I think it was originally intended??.....if I am struggling through a round I will regulary go to my 7i, obviously not for every shot, but it always seems to produce a "good shot" when I need it too, it is clearly a "mental" thing, but at my level it works for me!!:)

There's nothing wrong with favouring 1 club over every other in your bag. I'm sure if you spoke to any Tour player in the game, they'd be able to choose a club that filled them with confidence as they remember their favourite shot, or something like that.

it's a positive, and it should be embraced.

However, I see the other side as well, and if it gets to the stage as has been mentioned already, where you approach a ball thinking "7 iron, get in! oh, hold on i'm a bit further back than I thought" - then you're verging on negativity which is going to assist you in producing a sub standard shot with the selected club.

To all who have a "go to" club or a favourite that you'll use if everything else is misfiring......

What do you do if that ones misfiring too.

Because it should. If everything else isn't working how can your 6 or 8 or hybrid work?

I played a new course to me on Wednesday and although i got help from my playing partners, there was a lot of choices and dangers if it went wrong.

My 7 iron got a fair bit of use that day, I know just how far it will go and the confidence I have when I have it in my hand.

The same as the guy that doesnt have a go to club when he playing bad , play crap ha, tell me this imurg & i will use my own game as a yardstick , i play mp32 blades are you telling me it is as easy to hit an 8 iron blade as a 3 /4 iron blade? the forgiveness in cavity backs is possibly the same , id be inclined to answer your question by saying larger face size & loft would make some clubs easier than others ..

I know with mione the blade length is the same throughout the set, are yours different?

Personally my 4 iron is magic for me

mayb its the loft that makes it look bigger , i wouldnt be as into the technical end as most on here , il ask a different question to maybe see if that might get what im trying to say across , if you went to the range with a non golfer would you give them an 8 iron or a 4 iron to hit wit to get started , id give them the 8 coz in my opinion it would be easier to hit , to me anyhow , could be total bolderdash but hey
