Like you I thought the thread was about the go to club you know you can rely on. I'll usually keep playing the right club for the shot regardless and sometimes my 5 wood is close to getting slammed into the naughty corner but next time it's the right club I pull it out again, give it a stern talking to, and try again. I figure if I don't then it'll never work for me so try not to give into the temptation not to use it, or any other club, when the shot demands it.

But...I do love my 6 iron :clap:
 
Golf is about getting the ball round the course in as few shots as possible. Hitting the club and shot required, not the only shot you know, even though it will not get near the hole.
The argument about knock it up short of the green then rely on short game....We are handicap golfers. This means that we are not consistent enough to rely on anything to the true meaning of the term.

Par 5 500 yards, reachable in two, am I going to lay up? am I hell I am going for it, even if I miss the green I would like to think I will get away with a par (bogey at worst), laying up short is guaranteeing that extra shot will be used, whether it is from a chip, punch from the woods (again, handicap golfer, who says the layup will be perfect?) whatever.
In my opinion, having a go to club is overthinking and promotes negativity.

if you were in a medal or any qualifying comp would you keep plugging away with a club that wasnt working for you ? surely that will just put you in bad form & nearly guarantee .1 back ?

Brendy pretty much answered it for me :smirk:

If I've duffed, hooked, topped, sliced, to use your analogy, my 200 yard club. That's not the club, It's something I'm doing.

Maybe been a little lazy in my set-up, tried to smash the skin off the last one, took my eye off the ball pre impact, the list goes on.

If on the next hole I have a 200 yard approach, Yes, I'll pull the club again, but focus on the basics (Set-up, ball position, head down etc) in my practice swing, address the ball and hit it.

This is probaly why I play off 18 and you play off alot less.
 
I do agree with you but im looking at it from a different side, 500 par 5 reachable? .. yes gud drive & good 3/4 iron . But if im having a day i cant hit the 3/4 iron ie pulling , pushing , topping etc , i know my 6 iron is working smack that down the middle , what is going to be ? wedge in ? if your a golfer that has the ability to get on 500yard par 5 in 2 then a decent wedge will / should give you 2 putts for par , as you mentioned tho handicap golfers & consistency dont often go hand in hand , as for your bit on hitting the shot required i would use the smartest shot required on any given day .... just a thought for ye all , if your driver wasnt working ie hooks / slices etc would you keep plugging away with it & play from the trees or oob etc or change club & keep it in play but shorter ?

I've never understood how 1 club cannot be working? With me I'm either playing well or I'm not. I don't play well with certain clubs and not with others. Hit the shot you need to hit to get the right result and then hit the next one from wherever it lands. All this safe club nonsense is all in your head.

True, but the mental side of golf has a huge effect, so if having a go-to club frees a player up to hit a good shot, then why should it be a problem? If there is a "bad" club that they beleive they can't hit, then that IS destructive and I agree with you. Different folks, different stokes, I suppose.

So if you were playing today & your driver wasnt doing the biz , whether this be caused by you or the club .. you therefore can not hit any club well today ? p.s i have to blame the club if i blamed myself for the bad shots i would have packed in years ago ..

If you have a bad club you don't think you can hit, don't carry it.

A bad shot is never caused by the club, but in answer to your question yes that about sums it up for me. I usually play badly when my swing is too quick so it doesn't matter which club I'm hitting, I just try to slow things down and hit the club I need to.

It probably is but having a "good" club actually creates negative thoughts. Imagine your walking up to your approach and your thinking "great i can hit my 8i here", and then you get to your ball and you're a bit further away than you thought or the wind picks up and you have to hit a 7 or 6i but all the time your wishing you could hit your 8. That surely puts a negative thought into hitting the 7 or 6?

I like to think I can hit the required shot with the club that is needed and if I mess it up it's because I put a bad swing on it. I don't want to be standing over a shot wishing I could hit my "good" club. No-one has a club that they hit well every shot.

The scenarios you outline are not ones I've ever encountered, so I think the way I perceive the idea of a good club is different to yours. We're probably going round in circles here and I want my lunch ;)
 
I tend to reach for one of my 2 hybrids if all is going wrong as they tend to work even if my swing is failing me. It is not so much as one other club failing but if my long irons are not on form then I can normally work something with my hybrid or if my driver is performing badly then my hybrid gives me enough distance off the tee.
