When Did The Golf Bug Bite?

January this year. Visiting family in New York for the New Year and my brother, who has been playing a few years now, asked me if I fancied joining him on the range. that was it - hooked! Bought a starter set from AG as soon as I got home, hit a few on the range and booked a 6 lesson beginners course.

Joined my first club in March, and since then have spent countless (happy) hours on the course and a small fortune (hope the FPO doesn't read this post lol) on kit.

Now wishing the bug had bitten years ago

November 2006, Gemas Golf Resort, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, just before 2 pm.

The company had sent me out to Malaysia for a 5 week job. On the last Friday we finished early and the permanent guys who had joined the local club asked if I'd like to join them for 9 holes (you had to beat the thunderstorms).

1st hole, duffed it off the tee, 'try this one' said my mate, blew it right over the green and into the ulu (no getting that, there are snakes and things in there).

off we went, me trying different clubs, and losing the odd ball, them trying to slow my swing below a blur! get to a hole with a tee shot over a lake, I thought I'd try the safe route and a 5-wood. mighty wind up, didn't feel it go, my mate said I'd hit it at least 250 but unfortunately into a monsoon drain (you don't go in there either, nor the lakes - there are things in there that might want the ball more than you do!).

my mate said 'if you hit one good one you'll be happy, hit four and you'll be hooked'.

flew home - bought the clubs.

(this wasn't my first time out though, 1973 - St Andrews - Eden. Got a cheap deal on a Wednesday as I was stationed at Leuchars. Went out with a couple of guys who played, I played hockey - same game isn't it? They went off, no interest in helping, I followed on, and the bug just never bit - even though I got a birdie!)

I've been bitten twice.

First time early eighties when i was in my mid twenties.
Marriage, Kid, divorce and CSA brought my golf bug to an end on that occasion.

Second time about eighteen months ago when i went to the range with my son. I picked up a club and have not looked back since. Bought clubs, joint a club and now having lessons/coaching and working on my handicap.

I think I've been bitten, I played my first full game yesterday and all I can think about is going out again! I was just won.
