As the title suggests, when did the golf bug get you. Was it a quick thing or did it sneak up on you?

For me I had the odd knock growing up but could hardly hit the ball and didn't enjoy it. Up until just over two years ago, a friend took my to a pitch and putt and the first shot landed 10' fromt he pin, I played the 9 holes in 45 and as soon as I got home had another nine holes with another friend.

And that was that.

Tiger Woods on the PS2 about 3 years ago.

Played it so much I was about 60 under par on tournament mode.

Thought I'd have a go as it couldn't be that hard :o

Strangely it was quite similar for me, I was very keen as a youngster but I wouldn't say the bug had got me by then as I was into other hobbies like fishing and just played golf when my Dad did.
It really got me last year when I started playing pitch and putt, I didn't have any intention of taking up golf seriously again but I kept playing regularly at my local pitch and putt course and trying to improve on my best score. It is an 18 hole course with holes between 60-130 yards and my best score is 43, so I guessed if I was striking well enough to do that well I may have some joy playing 'real golf' again and as i've mentionned before im playing better than ever.
Although the strange thing is my short game is pants.

The summer of 1972 when Lee Trevino won at Muirfield, beating Tony Jacklin in the process, was the turning point for me.

I'd somehow gotten a junior Slazenger 5 iron and I used to play up and down the rugby pitch near where we stayed. Seeing Trevino win that Open was what made me want to take this more seriously. My first full round was at Silverknowes golf course in Edinburgh and I shot 129 on my first round.

The rest is history :D

1983 I was 11 went to a golf club with a friend who played a bit.
I absolutely nailed his 4 wood with my third swing and been absolutely hooked ever since, but its ok I can stop whenever I want I am in control of it.

My old man played golf years ago and he got me a junior club so I could go to the range with him. But I never played courses so didn't really enjoy it.
Joined a club 18 months ago and am now consumed by golf.....love it!

funny how you can remember the shot, isn't it.

I remember going to the driving range and chunking every shot, vibrations up my arm, then the pitch and put two years ago, first hole, probably less than 100 yards, PW, never felt the ball and it arced onto the green.

I remember thinking 'that's what it is supposed to feel like'

The fact I four putted from 10' is neither here nor there...

I know its is amazing the detail you can recall from games of golf you have played many years ago, but you can't remember where you left the TV remote or your car keys, selective memory at its best.

I was a member of a social club that had a golf society. They were short on numbers and asked if I'd like to join them on an outing. I was lent all the gear by various people and off we went. I can remember standing on the first tee, having never played before, and about 20 mates waiting behind...I absolutely nailed a 3 wood off the tee (probably my only good shot of the round) and that was it...hooked.

BTW I was about 25 at the time.

My ex-wife got me into it.
About 25 years ago we both had the day off and I suggested going to bed for a mammoth session.
She said "you've got more chance of playing golf"....

The rest, as they say, is history.

Aged 10. Sandown Park were doing a weekly series of lessons for kids and I'd been bugging my dad to start playing. He was happy as he had an hour (maybe two as it was a dustbin full of balls hit as many as you like) to have a few beers in the bar (this was the 70's and drink driving wasn't the issue it is today). Armed with an interlocking grip and a resemblance of a swing we ventured onto the par 3 course on the Friday. Can't remember anything except a sweet tee shot off the 18th onto the green.

i played when i was about 17 (5 years ago) could never really get under 100 so ended up giving it up,..

then randomly decided to watch the recent british open with Tom Watson,... enough said really.

have since joined my golf club, purchased various new clubs, getting pro lessons, etc.

For me it was in 1965. I had just said goodbye to my dog and colleagues encouraged me to play golf for the exercise. I played until 1981 when a change of location meant I could not get membership of a club.
It bit again in 2006 when I was 73. I should have resisted it since I have never got to grips with the game and failing strength stops me from hitting the shots like I should. I keep trying............ :(

Bit like you spof hadnt played for about 30 years so I decided to do something rather than work every weekend, my son was playing and said american golf were selling starter sets cheap and that was 18 months ago now I,m hooked big time, now on a decent set of clubs playing off 21

I was invited to play in a society match by my brother. I borrowed my dads old clubs that had been in the shed for 4.5Billion years, the grips were like bakelite and the heads were almost invisible - shot 99. Everyone made a lot of fuss about it so I decided to play again the next day and shot 108, I couldn't believe that I'd gotten worse overnight.... the rest is history.

When did 10 bob notes go out of circulation? I remember getting a 10 bob note for my birthday one year and buying some golf balls. Must have been around 1970.
My dad's uncle was club steward at Largs Routenburn and I remember as a wee boy walking round with them and being allowed to hit a few shots.
My dad's Uncle John was a neighbour of and a great boozing buddy of Bob Torrance and I remember getting a few tips from him. Didn't do a lot of good.
I also remember Sam Torrance who at that time would be in his late teens hanging around looking to play for money.
