Ever see that game show Wheel of Fortune where you spin the wheel and you can win the amount of money it lands on? It can be anything from a few pounds up to thousands and you never know what you're going to get until you spin that wheel. That's exactly how my golf feels at the minute. I never know what sort of shot I'm going to hit until I strike the ball. Will it be a straight pull? A high slice? A peach of a shot that a single figure player would be proud of? (I play off 20 btw!) I know the pulls and slices are caused by the dreaded out to in swing path but I must get it right occasionally when I manage to hit a straight one or even a draw (rarely).

The great shots convince me that I could be a better, more consistent player if I put the practice in, but there's the rub. I just have to make time to do it. *Sigh*

i know exactly what you mean!

i play off 14 and my good shots are good enough to be a scratch golfer. i do expect so many bad shots per round....

7 over my handicap again this weekend - dont think i even hit 7 bad shots, but they all seem to cost me a lost ball or worse!

i think its all about the short game, but i cant bring myself to practice it

Indeed golf is like that game, If we all hit really good straight shots we wouldnt need handicaps.

Practice is a wonderfull thing but most of us practice the wrond stuff. I went to the range twice last week and then I played rubbish on Saturday and Sunday Somethimes I think we'd be better of taking a break from golf instead of to much golf.

We need to know what practice is all abut and not just about hitting 300 balls and thinking we have if sorted.

To much golf is worse than to little

We all know where you are coming from. I had 4 or 5 straight ones, 10 pulls, 3 slices, 1 fade, 2 pushes, a couple of small draws and 6 fat yesterday. Impossible to play with such a variety.
My score was the worst ever.

What I do feel though is that despite all this, my swing is "grooveable" (always has been before), as it is for most of us. Go down the range, get a feel for the overiding swing path that is causing the trouble and work it out of the system. With a game plan (eg.(for me) make a better turn and attack from the inside) you/we/I can build some reliable repetition. You'll never fix the real odd-ball ones (like an inexplicable push when you've been fading/slicing) but a good score can be made with a clear idea of what the main weakness is.

I can't agree that golf is in any way like the Wheel of Fortune. As a golfer you do have some control over the outcome of the shot. In a game of pure chance you have no control at all. The reason you have a variety of results from your shots muttlee, is because you play off 20, and you, like me and many others, are inconsistent. If you knew whether you were going to slice it, pull it, cream it or draw it before you made your swing, you would probable be a scratch golfer; if you can chip and putt.

Don't agree Dave, the reason mutleee plays off 20 (and I play off 25) is because we're inconsistent. We're not inconsistent because we play off big numbers.
I know my basic problem is a reverse pivot, but knowing and curing (even after a lesson or two) aren't the same thing.
Stick with it mutleee, you're not alone (unfortunately!)

I played on Friday and shot 82 (6 under h/cap). I have been spending time on my short game and it paid off.

I played on Saturday and shot 95 and couldn't hit a barn door.

Sometimes I hate this game!

Can I play devil's advocate and enquire about this logic. If you played 7 over 14, you went round +21?

I've never hit a shot really worthy of a scratch player....even managing 4 or 5 over round. If you are managing to shoot over 90, I'm not sure I could agree with you!!!

What, never? I play off 20 as I said but every now and then I hit a peach of a drive right down the middle (although undoubtedly a lot shorter than a scratch player would hit it) or hit a mid iron to a few feet or chip it stone dead from a tricky lie. All flukes of course, but I like to think a scratch player would be happy with any of them!

My friends call me jackpot. I will either play under my h/cap or over it, never to it.

Drives me mad, consistency is my issue
