What's the obsession with distance?

With TM and the like talking about you can get 17 extra yards with this club compared to the last and all, why are companies and players so obsessed with length?

Surely people should be more interested in clubs that go straighter, however this could be affected my the players swing.

I use a Callaway Diablo Octane driver which uses some hyperbolic face technology, which apparently means off centred hits travel straighter. To a degree I agree with Callaway on this as I have hit very off centred his that still go straight with minimal side spin.

So, if TM came out instead and said this club has been proven to travel straighter but loses you say 20 yards off the tee would you buy it?

I would.

M10. the cobra e9 face technology is basically what your referring too. my old burner could be wild, out the toe and there was a massive hook on cue... the cobra if you catch one out the toe will still fly pretty straight with a slight draw, not the big hook.

i was talking with a friend today who is just ordering new clubs, and i found myself preaching words of wisdom that i need to take on board in my own game. " you cannot increase the distance you hit, but you can reduce the dispersion "

ive just brought new irons not because i wanted me length but because i wanted a more controlled and predictable flight, with a tighter dispersion. early signs show i could have exactly what i wanted.

I've always held my hand up and said I am a short hitter and am trying to focus on accuracy over everything else. Sadly that is also lacking at times but for the most part my game is about knowing my limitations andif I can't get at long par 4's in two then play to a sensible lay up length and trust the wedges to get me close enough to one putt. I don't believe the TM hype but I'm off to a TM demo day soon so at least I can try the RBZ and new R11 out and see for myself. I remain unconvinced although the RBZ has been on top of my must try list for a while to see what the fuss is about
