After we'd teed off the next hole I'd mention it whilst we're walking to our balls.

"I think you flicked the sand back there. That should be a penalty, just so you don't get stung by someone if you've got a good score going another time"

I kinda agree but I'd never cop out and call it being stung by someone. That implies the person pointing out the penalty is doing it out of spite.

Option 4 in the poll then? ;)

I would call it on him (apologetically) as in a stoke play comp every shot counts (albeit in a very small way) towards CSS - and that impacts others. It can hardly make is day much worse and best that he knows the rule if he doesn't already.

why does the player +10 have to be in a bad mood.

by that stage I am usually well past the cranky and into acceptance stage.

I think it's a 2 shot penalty and I'd call it straight away. (probably check it's 2 shots later with him in the clubhouse before signing his card).

If he tees off the 18th without taking the penalty he's supposed to be DQ'd (I think)

Penalties are part of the rules of golf.... and clearly I need to brush up on them a bit :whoo:

But I'd definitely tell him if it was a medal. Friendly game I'd tell him but wouldn't penalise him... cos that's what friends are for.... :mmm:

to be honest i dont stand that close to my pp to call a penalty,i would like to think they would call it themselves, how would anyone like someone stood over them putting their stroke under a microscope, when their own ball is 30 yds away in the clag, talk about slowing play down.

Don't see the problem with touching the sand on your back swing.

Generally if I take 2 or more tries to get out the bunker and fail, I'll just pick it up and throw it onto the green.

As long as no one is looking it's okay right?...

Seriously though I'd tell him just as he was about to take the first sip of his beer, then pop to the toilets via the car park and let his tyres down.

If he is in the bunker on our 17th, I would be on the left of the green and would not see any infringement. If fact I just don't watch other players that closely unless my ball is close by. Generally, my eyesight is not that good anyway but if I saw it and actually remembered it to be a penalty, I would call it so he knew for future reference.

I'd ask him what he scored. If he's aware he touched the sand and called a penalty then fine. If not I'd tell him and adjust the score accordingly. He may not be aware of the rule and the penalty for breaking it but in a comp there's really no alternative

Typically I wouldn’t be looking that intently to notice a brush but if I thought I did notice it I’d ask him if he touched the sand on his back swing (using empathetic tone of voice) then:

If he says no, then he didn’t
If he says yes, then he can add the penalty
If he says why then I'd explain implication & wait for his Y/N answer

I would go with Robobums approach if I actually seen it, but the chances are I wouldn't even notice as I don't watch anyone's bunker shots that closely

I'd tell him at the point of putting his score on the card if he hadn't added the penalty. I would prefer to be told that I'd broken a rule at the time, rather than in the bar just because someone felt sorry for me, whilst having a crap round
