What would you do?

I'd play it as a driver then 3 wood as theres no real danger and its worth attacking. After that I'd see what Im left with and go from there.

All my shot choices are based on yards & danger never what the par is.

Driver, 8/9/PW, 2 putts.

2 putts if I'm lucky!

after a bogey, bogey start I'd put a 4 on the card and be happy with a par.

EDIT - I'd be playing this hole for a 4 whether a par 4 or 5.

I'd be looking for a 4 whatever the par is. I'd be very happy if it was a par4 and be content if it was a par 5. If I took 5 then I wouldnt be happy if it was a par5 (cos thats a short 5 and should be birdied by me tbh) and i'd be peed off if it was a par4 too :mad:

It would always be driver unless a really strong wind from behind in which case i'd hit a nice high 3-wood. Then take whatever club gets me to the green and hopefully 2 putts or a nice up and down...job done...next tee

I'd be trying for a 4 but wouldnt be too unhappy with a 5 i guess.

I'd be hitting driver to try to get myself within 3 wood range, though its not likely. I am pretty straight though and there's no obvious trouble so i'd bash the driver.
Think i'd hit a 3 wood with a good lie, not overly worried about trying to get up and down if i'm in the sand. would fancy getting up and down from 50 yards too.

If i get a poor lie from my drive i'd be looking at the rescue first and if thats not looking good then the 6 iron and play from there. A 5 here isnt a disatser, even if its a par 4 - thats a big par 4 though. I'd be looking to make the shot back at another point!

How about you bob?

Obviously a 4 would be the aim. BUt I wouldn't be unhappy with a 5. At 480-odd yards its a tough par 4 for mortals but a straight-forward par 5.
I'd hit Driver + whatever I have left to get on or more probably around the green. Then my cosmic short game would leave me with a tap-in par/birdie.

In my dreams........

All depends on the weather(wind).
Id play 3 wood off the tee and maybe 2 PW to the centre of the green But id play up the right hand side of the fairway and hope to 2 putt......If its a par 4 im off with a bogie and happy and if its a par 5 im off with par and even happier......

Depends on conditions, how I'm swinging and whther this was a final round of a huge tournament or the 3rd hole of the medal. I'd like to think that being a short hitter I'd take the sensible approach and make a five aiming to hit the green with the 3rd shot and peave a chance to putt for the four. If it is a par 5 then I may or may not get a shot and so par is fine and if it plays as a par 4 then I'd be happy with a nett par.

I don't think there is ever a definitive way to play any hole.

3 wood to the fairway or 1st cut 4 iron just short of green chip on and 2 putts aim for bogey but take par depending on par.

The whole point of this thread was to see if players approached the hole differently if it was a par 4 or 5.

No, I want a 3 either way :)

I think it depends if you have the length to get there in two. I don't believe there is such a thing as an 'easy' birdie, there are shorter holes which offer up more birdie chances but generally you still have to hit at least one good shot to make any birdie.

What I would do it mentally play the hole first;

'Driver, down the middle, about 280 yards, leaving me a nice 4I onto the green and hopefully sink the putt for a cracking 3, but probably be happy with two putts for a 4'

Whereas actually I would do this;

Driver miss-hit left about 100 yards into the rough, dig it out with a 7I right over the fairway and into the right-hand rough, dig it out again onto the fairway, 4I leaving me another 140 to the green, push a 9I right, duff my chip on, try again and leave it very short, three putts for a 10'

I would attempt to play it in as few shots as possible.

I would hit my drive, hopefully straight, then hit my 2nd shot (if required) then my 3rd (if required) etc etc etc

Dependant on whether I'm having a good swing day or bad swing day - defined by the severity of my misses ie good day 10 yards off line to bad day 20 yards off line.

Good day take driver off tee aiming for right edge of fairway which should leave me roughly 210 yards for my 2nd going by my average driver distance. This puts me slap bang on 4 iron distance and I'm happy with no more than a 4 even if I find the bunker.

Bad day I take 3 wood off the tee (plenty of loft and distance plus my most reliable club) leaving me about 235 yards left. Hit 7 iron to lay up down right side of fairway with the 1st cut of rough being more favourable than left of the fairway as a miss. This leaves me 75 yards ie perfect 60deg wedge distance and I'm happy with a 5 but not devestated with a 6.

Surely it's more about knowing the limits of your game on that day than what you'd do every time? The days when it feels like you couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo this type of hole can still be made in 5 if you're not stupid. Surely if you can hit 5 iron 175 plus then you could hit 5 iron x 2 leaving you 135 in and still have an outside chance of a 4?
