What would you do to improve your golf game?

I previously started a thread asking about the standard of golf in UK compared to other countries.

So after 26 responses (outside of my own) here are the results on how you all go about improving your golf game, I've gone with the main answer as many have more than one:

Lessons accounted for 10
playing 8
practice 5
books 2
online instruction (YouTube) 1
and no desire to improve is a unique outlook!

Now, I have some new questions to ask:

  1. How much time would you dedicate to improving your game?
  2. What would you like to do more of to help you improve?
  3. What would you buy to help your game?

When I asked these questions in Germany everyone said:
  1. They ALL take lessons most weeks and at least once per month
  2. They would practice 2-3 times per week, but would love to have more time to practice what they had been taught
  3. They would buy a better power trolley to improve their game!

So, if you spend time trying to improve your game on whatever method you choose, tell me how long/ often you would and what you would do more of and buy to help you.

3-5 hrs a week is my current, thats 2 x range sessions and putting at home

I hope to do more like 7 - 10 hrs including 2 x range sessions, putting and 2 -3 hrs short game. If my possible new permanent job role happens its doable as I wont be working weekends or need overtime :)

we shall see. My intention is to get to mid teens this year so a 6 shot drop in h/c

That helps! What would you buy to help you get your 6 shot drop in hcp?

I practice 4-5 times a week at the moment, 50 balls at the range, an hour or so short game and 30 mins putting. This will change as the weather improves and start working on my wedges again, scrambling, bunkers, and practice rounds. I am having 1 lesson every 2-3 weeks (block booking of 5 hours) working on consistency of irons and learning a new driver swing.

Only thing I will even think about buying this year is a custom fit driver once I get the swing right. Happy with everything else except for my irons but I am getting those shiny babies for free thanks to GM and Mizuno :)

Seems a smart choice, hope it works for you!

Just started an hour a day at the range - every day - rather than the once a week or so I've been doing since starting having lessons.

Also going to get in several chipping and putting sessions a week around the practice green at the links - once light nights come I'm going to live at the course - this is the first year I've concentrated on golf in a decade. I always said I didn't have time - I can make time if I want to get better.

50 or 100 balls at the range just about every day I don't play, practising wedge, 4 iron (because it's hard to hit from the mat) and driver. The range is only 3 minutes drive away, too handy! Frustrating thing is I can hit it great at the range & then come up with some bad shots on the course that I never hit on the range. So, once the nights get lighter, it will be 3 or 4 sessions a week on the practice ground which, unfortunately, is only about a 5 iron long but it's the short game that needs attention. I also like to mooch around alone on the course, playing two balls and trying different shots - better than practice in some ways. Would love to be single digits again this year.

We probably all can make the time if we only want it badly enough, sounds like you have a plan there, good luck!

Always loved doing this, missed this most when I lived in Thailand as you always have a caddy and it just doesn't feel right to mess around when not alone.

1.How much time would you dedicate to improving your game?
As much as I can - but it has to be constructive

2.What would you like to do more of to help you improve?
More short game - not really got any top practice facilities locally. Need more work on this area regardless

3.What would you buy to help your game?
Dedicated short game lessons

This is an area where we sadly fall way behind compared to some other countries.

1 - Every time I lace up my spikes I'm dedicated to improving I suppose, even if Its the most casual of knocks. If I'm having a bad round and the /match/target score is out of reach I kinda privately focus on say driver for example right ok I'm gonna see how I can have a mini mental training session with the big stick. If I say to myself the target now is not to hit right of fairway for the rest of the round I can come away happy regardless of the outcome of the game. Doesn't impact anyone else im playing with, just gives me a new focus rather than the overall performance if im struggling. putting / chipping / approach / recovery applies to all really. If I'm playing solo I'll usually pick an area before I tee off to focus on usually ends up being recovery though!!! Little spells on the range usually though if im playing well to try figure out why its going well rather than wrong.

2 - Get an actual membership rather than a season ticket / actual competitions something with a real competitive edge I think would help improve mentally. Happy at the moment friendly knocks, solo and golfshakin' my guide handicap.

3 - My own course - before every euro millions draw I actually have a conversation with my self actually trying to justify spending 30m of my 80m on my course like it will ever happen!

I tried selling my soul to the Devil but he didn't want it.

I tried the same thing. Got the response "Why would I buy what I already own". Oh well.

  1. How much time would you dedicate to improving your game?
    1-2 hours per week.
  2. What would you like to do more of to help you improve?
    More short game.
  3. What would you buy to help your game?
Maybe a putting mirror and practice matt for the house (no carpets). The other thing is equipment I'm more confident with.

1. How much time would you dedicate to improving your game? None. I'm happy with my game. I only visit the practice area when something is going wrong with my game.

2. What would you like to do more of to help you improve? Nothing. See above.

3. What would you buy to help your game? If a club or clubs were released that added 50yds to my drives or allowed me to hit shots into the green with pin point accuracy I'd be tempted to get the cheque book out. But at present I have everything I need to play the game I have.
