what would you call walking distance, ie close enough not to drive?

Walked up to my dads last night with the dog, took me 35mins, only 1.7miles, but the dog wanted to sniff every lamppost and blade of grass. In the car takes about 5mins.

I remember a chubby guy at uni who drove about half a mile to get a mars bar. The shop was only about 2 or 300 yards away but he took the long way round (1-way street) in the car due to the fact it was an uphill walk...

I don't mine how far I have to walk and generally the time taken is more of a factor.

Quite often I will park at the local Tesco, then walk to the council offices, post office and bank, nice round trip. gets me to all the places I need to be most days and helps get my step count up.

Need to have a downstairs loo fitted as the walk is too far upstairs.

Seriously though...

Too far to walk? depends on how often you have to do it.... imagine walking to school and home only to find out your child has left their PE kit at home..... do you turn around and walk back to school again or take the car?

Within 20 minutes I will usually walk. I have 15 minute brisk walk to the train station each morning, so quite happy with anything up to a mile or so. It's the Mrs who is the lazy one!

One advantage of living in a smallish market town is that most of it is within a mile or so. For this reason, I would normally walk to the station or into town, which are 10 and 15 mins away respectively.

The younger members of the family and their friends seem a lot more reluctant to get onto shanks' pony than us old 'uns. The most insignificant after school activity leads to an expectation of a lift home which their mothers are only too happy to indulge.....
