the wife and i often walk into the centre of Inverness its about a 15 min walk. we often see our neighbors drive in, even but might be shopping i suppose.

one of our other neighbors goes to the tennis club around the corner and always drives, even though it must be quicker to walk.

tonight made me think, when i went out to walk the dogs, i passed a lady on the way that i know though work. she was getting in her car in sports gear.

i cut though the local spots center car park to get to the Islands and river path and see her getting out of her car and joining a running group the meets at the back of the car park. would have taken her 2 or 3 mins to run or walk here.

admittedly she might have a reason for driving.

so what would you consider close enough to walk or drive?

Generally 15 minutes I guess, but it will depend on a number of factors including time available, weather etc

Rather depends on how much time I have to spare, what the weather is like? and if I need to carry anything, but probably up to a mile/15 minutes.

Walking distance is about 20 minutes, but longer if it's a nice day, I'm not in a hurry, parking at destination is a nightmare etc. Shorter if it is chucking it down, or going on somewhere else after...

As we live in the country we have to drive everywhere.
I walk two or three miles a day with my dog and up to 4 hours if I take to the hills.

Respect to Jo Brand on her wee walk, I think she is doing about 18 miles a day for a week. She certainly picked some bad weather for it.

The wife has taken many years to educate. I walk miles rather than take the car, even though I love driving. She would take the car to go half a mile if I'm not around, even though she doesn't like driving.

My shops are no more than Driver & 5i away and I'd think nothing of getting in the car 🤔

What makes me laugh is a girl at my gym that drives 7 miles to the gym every morning and walks 6 miles on the treadmill!!!!!

We just moved house, one of the main reasons was to be closer to stuff to be able to walk. Primary school is now 1km walk each way (some days we have to go there 3 times a day!!) Train station is 1.3km, town center is 1.5km. Walk to all of them unless its tipping down or very short on time. Old house was 3km from the school and too far to walk with a 3yr old. Much more than 1.5km and i will drive, but quite often in London, i get off the tube two or three stops early if i have time and walk, much nicer and you see so much more stuff!!

Having moved to a townhouse in the middle of a city in August, I can safely say we use the cars about 80% less than we used to. The kids walk a mile each way to school every day, my wife walks about a mile to her pharmacy and I now work from a home office. If we are eating out, we always walk there and back, same for going for a few drinks. The distance is usually less than 1.5 miles though.

We also cycle rather than drive. My rackets club is less than a mile a way and I tend to cycle there unless I have three big bags and two kids then we normally drive although this is invariably because we are going somewhere else afterwards rather than home.

It has been a nice change for all of us. I regularly do more than 100,000 steps a week according to my Fitbit and this equates to just over 50 miles of walking. Does include 3 squash matches a week though plus half a dozen dog walks and invariably a family hike of some sort.

I often walk home after a night out if the next bus or tram isn't due for a while.
Takes 50 minutes, it's a beautiful walk, no problem.

Weather dependent. I'm a fair weather golfer and a fair weather walker!! In good weather we will often walk 2 or 3 miles without thinking. Often walk home similar distance after a night out saving the taxi fare. A lot of people seem completely taken aback when they ask how we are getting somewhere and we say "we'll walk". It's why we have legs really isn't it?
