I went down the driving range this morning and I was having a think about what aspect of my game is currently holding me back.

I know a lot of people will say putting will help the most, but for me - it isn't terrible and for my current level I would say that my putting is more than adequate.

Personally I think if my irons were more accurate, I would get more birdies and it would really help my score. Currently, if I hit the green in regulation - I rarely have a realistic birdie opportunity.

Was wondering what it would be for you!

It's easy to focus on an element of your game in isolation but that in itself may not be the problem.

For instance, to make the next jump in standard for me I need to hole more birdie putts, except that my putting is good for my standard. So I need to get my irons closer to give me more 12ft and in putts, except that my GIR are decent so my irons are pretty good too.

I need to be hitting from 150yds and in more regularly as I feel that I can get it close with an 8iron and less. So, in conclusion, an extra 20yards in the fairway off the tee is what would enable all the other parts of my game to function better.

Now isn't there a new driver (or ten) that promises me these extra yards??!! :D :D

I agree with that, the better you get the tighter the margins are, one loose drive and that's your card ruined, a 'not dead' chip that results in a missed putt and there goes another shot. If you are driving well and finding greens in reg then the shots to be saved are on the greens... see above post :D

My game hasn't really progresed equally. I'm currently satisfied with my driving. I allow for one or two poor drives a round, but I'm happy if I can keep it fairly straight and in the right areas.

My short game is ok at the moment, I certainly don't drop shots because of it. Same with my putting. I don't really lose any shots because of it.

My irons are inconsistent though, and if they were better I would get in better situations and create more birdie opportunities x

I'm not on the big boys course yet but it would have to be my irons, although I hope that may change when my c/f sticks arrive and I don't have to borrow. My putting is much more solid but my GIR stats are woeful.

Call me thick, but what is "GIR"

apart from the noise I make when i miss a 6 inch putt

Here are my stats for 2009. Clearly I'm missing a lot of fairways but more tellingly is the fact that I don't scramble and putt anywhere near as well as I need to with single figure aspirations.

Key stats for Martin Bedborough (Hcap: 11) - 2009

Fairways Hit: 45% (Hcap Std: 14)
Greens In Reg: 29% (Hcap Std: 11)
Putts Per Round: 33.15 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 18% (Hcap Std: 10)
Birdie Conversion: 14% (Hcap Std: 14)
Par Scrambles: 22% (Hcap Std: 13)

Mines definitely mental...I can par both nines with regularity, but very very rarely together. Even if I'm not putting well, it's usually due to confidence rather than a poor read or execution, so definitely mental for me.

You're thick -well you asked to be called it! ;)

GIR - greens in regulation

Steve,
When playing those short approach shots, think of the swing being steeper on the backswing and lower on the follow through.
Lots of people tend to do the opposite in an effort to lift the ball into the air. :)

I really need to improve my second shot. Around the green is OK and putting can be decent on a good day but my best rounds are when I am hitting the greens with my second shot. If I could do that more regularly then the handicap would tumble.

For me its driving accuracy.
Most parts of my game are working well at the moment and the 77 I shot on wednesday to win was in spite of my driver not because of it.
I hit driver 3 times in 3 different directions and didn't touch it again. I was lucky not to lose a ball from 2 of those. Used my 4 wood off the tee and got good distance - 230 yards+ - but it did make the 2nd shots harder.
A reliable (7 out of 10) driving game would see me in single figures faster than you could shout Fore!!

Iron shots for me.
On an average day my driving is "OK" and my putting is not too bad. It has improved a lot recently since using the YES Tracy putter.
But my irons are what let me down, especially from 150/190 out. I'd have more chance of pulling Catherine Zeta Jones than planting a flushed 5 or 4 iron onto a green. And I'm an ugly git....
