Just a quick question for the guys that know the handicap scoring system well..

Was playing off 20.7 but hit 46 points yesterday and now the suspense is killing me having to wait for the results and to see what i was cut..

I am fairly sure I won but you never know, but still should have a top 3.

I know its 0.4 up untill 20/21 then its 0.3 or something like that..

SSS i think yesterday would have been 38points.

Its been a long time coming I did not enter alot of comps last year and normaly hit 40+ points so I guess the only way is down for me now.. Aimming for something between 12-15 this year.

Assuming CSS was 38 pts (ie 2 below the par for the course).....

You are 8 shots better
You lose 0.4 for the first shot which takes you to 20.3
Then 7 x 0.3 = 2.1 for the other 7 shots so I make that an overall reduction to 18.2

I'm also assuming you have two arms and two legs so you shouldn't need more than 18 ever again and can stop doing silly scores like 46 points and saying things like "normally hit 40+ points" :D :D

Sounds like you should be off about 14 by the sounds of it if you normally hit 40 + points off 20.
I would prefer to struggle off a low handicap than embarrass myself with a regular 40 points.
I play with a pub society, after not playing for 5 years I offered a handicap that I thought I could not play to and so I said 11 and after just 4 rounds now play off 8 after shooting another high 30s points with 4 blobs and look forward to struggle off scratch and win nothing.
Easy game enit.

Will do, this is my 3rd year now playing when I joined I started as I student was giving a 25 HC. But I was bad lol,

full member last year and again this year so hopfully by the summer I will See what my real HC should be.

Was 4 over on the back nine which include a double on one hole.

If the comp was a qualifying comp, then I agree with those who have calculated it as 18.2.

If it wasn't a qualifying comp, then the Handicap Convenor has the option of chopping you for general play. However, for some peculiar reason, some Handicap Convenors don't like general play adjustments. I am not one of these, and if you were regularly scoring 40 points at my club you would have already been cut. Having now come in with 46, on top of the numerous 40-pointers, then I would be hacking you under general play to at least 16, maybe less (hence my avatar). I would have to analyse all your scores before making an informed decision.

I would be lower if I entered alot more last year, only played about 12 over the year and in turn got cut down to 20.7 end of season but the last month or two I be hitting 40+ but without any comps and handing cards in then of course I won't be cut, see how things pan out over the next month.

Sorry mate but you don't need to enter comps to get your handicap reduced.... Just put your cards in. Your H/Cap should be a reflection of you playing at your best and that is not scoring 40+ points every week. Comp or not....

rite, so if i dont enter a comp on a sat i can still get my card marked and put my scores into the computer and card into the wee box??

That be very good to know as sometimes i hate handing in 6 quid every comp as some weekends i be up on a sat and sun and paying out £12 a weekend on top of fees it fairly adds up over the golfing season.

That depends on the club actually. We don't do any assessments based on casual cards but that said we run around 40+ qualifying competitions per season. We will use the general play rule but that can be dangerous based on scores on a short winter course. The overall objective is always to have a players handicap reflecting their ability which means playing to it or better once in a while not every week of course.

I personally cannot understand why people join a club and only play a handful of competitions a year and I think the new inactive handicap rule is a start but the limit of 3 cards is a joke. The handicap system is designed to work better the more rounds played and yet it only mandates 3 rounds a year to consider a handicap current ?? Doesn't make sense.

I never heard of anyone at my club handing in a card not in the comp and getting cut, but i would be intrested to find out as i dont want to be a bandit all of my golfing life lol

In saying that I do plan to enter alot more comps this year..

When i think back over the summer months when i played i did enter a comp almost every other weekend..

Breaking that down if you think about it 28 weekends from march till september, and i played in 12 comps thats almost one every other week.. Plus bear in mind I live in the North of Ireland our summers dont match the south of england, so really pissy wet days we just stay indoors.

again thinking about the cost, 12 comps is costing me 72 pound on top of my golf fee's, for me its alot of money to be handing out for a return most week of silly sponsored prizes like a for exmaple last year, a "socket set" and a "lamp" at best you get a ten pound shield so I tend to try and enter only the comps that offer prize money into your club account.. These comp's tend not to be sponsored and over the summer we have alot of sponsored events...
