Hello,

What type of grass is used on the top golf courses, particularly at St Andrews?

I'm doing a piece of research and need to know what types of grass are used for fairways, greens and rough.

Could anyone help please?

Green stuff that needs mowing every now and then.

Ever thought of doing your own research?

Phone them up perhaps?

Whatever happened to initiative?

I love the warm welcome on this forum.

Do you not think I've already called them!!! Apprently no-one on site knows, the head greenkeeper is not there. They recommended the forum on this site... oh well!

every so often we have a student who hasn't bothered studying trying to use us for a quick fix - usually under the guise of a 'survey', the idea is we do the work for him.

we don't react well to this, so if you have been incorrectly tarred, you now know why.

but it's hugely encouraging that St Andrews recognise us!

nope, it's a case of if the cap fits,

now had he started by introducing himself (always a good bet in polite society) and saying that he had approached St A and that they had recommended us as a fount of all things golf . . .

anyway I thought we were going to try the erudite approach.

Re: Fine fescue

Hi Olly

Firstly I am surprised that no golfer knows what is a desirable grass, after all it’s the most important factor to good greens. It certainly more to it than ‘Green stuff that needs mowing every now and then’.

Anyway St Andrews have ‘fescue’ greens, this is the best and most sustainable. Most links courses will have fescue as this is the natural grass.

Parkland & heath land courses tend to go towards ‘brown top bents’ another great species. Some very good parkland courses are even heading towards fescue.

Lower down the chain is creeping bents, this is a high maintenance, high input grass. Tends to be mixed with meadow grass.

Then we have the meadow grass, universally poor grass, may look good but for all year round playability its poor. Many top courses have meadow grass but with the recent bad press they are relaying them.

I hope this helps

If you would like more info PM me

I'm not. I've never yet, in my admittedly limited experience, seen a web site for any course than has any mention of the type of grass on the green.

I will of course now be proven wrong!

There is a mention on some course websites of the types of grass. I have noticed it before and on the back of this got a "quality" seed mix that included fescues and bent. I have over seeded a portion of lawn with this and am hoping I can persuade HID to let me cut a hole in it. Just a corner of the lawn, that's all i'm after, about 15'x15'. (hope she reads this :D

Re: Fine fescue

There are actually thousands of grass types out there and new ones appearing all the time, greensman obviously knows his stuff but there is much more out there than you can imagine, many yrs ago I delivered grass seed many times, even to golf courses and about 25 yrs ago I never delivered the same type anywhere.

Re: Fine fescue

Why as a golfer do I need to know what type of grass I am playing/walking on?

I don't find it at all surprising that we don't know anything about golf course agronomy.

I bet you have products in your house designed by me that you have no idea how they work, or what materials they are made of, yet you are happy using them. Why is golf different?

Hi Vig am hoping to do the same but I think it needs major work and investment in equipment so may buy one of the putting mates and just lay it down on the lawn when I need it. Might be the easier cheaper alternative

What do other folks do?

I am glad this popped up because I will want to know what grass to order when I buy my house! H.I.D has no choice in the matter!
