I've just taken the plunge and bought a MD Superstrong 7 wood to close the gap in my bag for a couple of par 3's that I'm just short of with my 4 iron and just too long with my 5 wood. In addition I wanted a good 190 -210 yd club to use for going for the greens from the fairway.

The other options were a 3 iron which I think I's struggle to hit consistently or a hybrid however the 7 wood won on price, (£43 delivered), and ease of use off the fairway.

I know 7 woods have lost popularity due to the hybrid revolution so what do you use for the long par 3's and why?

7 wood & hybrids are for when you have lost it, my take is to use any of them then you must be struggling to strike your irons and they are as bad as the long putters we keep hearing about. If you really need them then what can I say other than fill your boots or get to the range.......:whoo:

I prefer to hit my 3 iron from fairway or tee,but next to useless from the rough which is why i carry a Hybrid. My Hybrid is 19deg which distance wise is more 2 Iron than 3 Iron, but easy enough to choke down on it to take a bit off.

Glad to see that there are still a few that carry long irons, I still have 3 iron upwards in my bag. I also carry a 2 iron instead of a 3 wood & it's great of a tight lie on a fairway. Hybrids well I might use them when I get my pension:rofl:

myself and long irons dont see eye to eye. im a hybrid and wood man. as stated in a different thread im turning into KJ. oh and by the way, golf is not how but how many! :ears:

I can't hit a 3 iron to save my life. Tried hybrids but just kept topping them. Bought a 7 wood last Summer and love it. Perfect for those longer par 3's and from off the fairway when things are getting a little tight.

Nearly always had a 7 wood in my bag [even when I could play a bit!]... Now I am old and past it my 7 wood see's a lot of action...

As a younger player I liked the 7 wood as it gave me a lot more height to my shots into the greens than I could ever achieve with long irons... By the same token if I wanted to blast one in under the wind I could still use 7 wood successfully by moving ball back in my stance and shorten follow through... A bit like Tigers 'stinger' shot... Having said that I invariably swapped my 7 wood out for a 2 iron when playing links type courses...

8 iron

I carry a three iron and depending on the day I play might swap out the hybrid for a mizuno fli-hi 2 iron thingy.

More often than not on a long par 3 I'll get my 4 iron out. I can carry nearly 200 with it so it covers most "long" par 3's.
But it depends on the breeze and the run...
We have a 200 yarder and I've hit everything from 3 wood to 7 iron into it.

Still got my 18° 2 Iron which gets a little run out now and again at the seaside but that doesn't make me a good player ;) I've got a nice little 5 wood and a 7 wood which are currently in the bag. The crazy thing is that these 'modern' clubs have the same loft on then as an old 4 wood and 5 wood I have tucked away in the rafters. Twenty years ago I'd never have played a 7 wood, but since it's now as strong as the 5wood I had in the mid nineties who's kidding who ? Anyone else remember when a 3 wood was 13° loft. You can get Drivers with that loft now.

My current bag has developed to suit my play round my course, I'm not interested in what the number on the clubhead says, it's the distance the club gets that's important.

I don't carry a hybrid, can't find one i don't hook. I carry a 1 iron which is one of my favourite clubs. I've always got on well with long irons and woods, think i'm just lucky that my swing seems to suit the longer clubs.

I love my fli-hi 2 iron, don't always hit it cleanly but it always goes dead straight.

Hybrid for me, although I play it like a fairway wood, I can't hit the thing like an iron at all... Works for me and good for about 215 yards. Otherwise it the 4 iron for about 205 ish...

I was practising my long irons at the range the other day and, for a change, as a swing thought I tried thinking about hitting as low a shot as I could, rather than worrying about getting the ball airborne, and the result was a much better strike flight.

No doubt I'll have forgotten the thought the next time I play though.

Hybrid for me. Can hit from nearly any lie with it and its good for anywhere between 170-200 yards at the moment. In the summer it will be my go to club from 200 yards out. Ive never tried hitting a 3 iron but can hit my 4 pretty well off the tee.
