Played the April medal today. Was a light drizzle on the first but had degenerated to steady rain by the second which lasted until after the turn.

I wasn't too confident after recent form but my practice sessions told me I was on the right track and the swing changes for coming along. Nearly drove the 1st (229 par 3 into a stiff breeze) but hit the greenside bunker. Got out and then 3 stabbed.

That was the story of my front 9 really. Nothing special but very good ball striking without being able to score. Couldn't buy a putt until I holed a 10 footer for par on 8. Out in 43 (one over my handicap).

The back 9 was much the same. Kept getting out of position and having to try and get up and down or would hit a fairway and then miss a green. Got to 17 (218 yard par 3) knowing that a 4 and a par 5 at the last would be good enough for a 72 (+2) which in my mind was a reasonable return for the way I had played and may squeak a top 5 finish.

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decided to hit two tee shots out of bounds. They weren't bad shots as such. They were nicely struck with a bit of draw but started too straight and took a firm bounce left. One was only OB by about a foof and the other never got found. I hit my 5th from the tee into a greenside bunker and got up and down for a fighting 7. Frittered another shot with a bad chip at the last and finished on nett 77 (+7) which didn;t really reflect how I played.

The course was in good knick and had stood up well to the heavy rain we have had down here in the last 48 hours. Only one flooded bunker and only 3 holes with any standing water.

Got an inter-club match tomorrow against another local club (Sand Martins near Wokingham). We beat them last year and I won my match from to down with three to play with a birdie nett eagle at the last.

Just blame it on the fact you are still warming up for the summer. I do it all the time, although it get a bit thin once you are still saying it in August.

Sad to hear you lost it a little just at the end. I think everyone knows that feeling. Just keep hitting, it sounds like you are going on the right track.

Wind, rain and 25 ass$%& from a local footaball club, on a society day. Driving into each other in the buggys, skidding on the fairways, driving down the fairways and not sticking to the paths, and generally chewing up the ground with buggies and clubs. I am not happy. Go back to your effing crap game and let me have some peace!!

Did I mention the attire, might as well have been sponsored by JJB Sports. Sod orff!!!!!!

Yes I am a member, but the club hosts societies and pay and play. It's not the most expensive of courses, but fits my budget. I did have a word with the course marshall who was already on his way to 'have a word with them' following other complaints. We were out of sight when the course marshall got there, so I don't know what happened. But bear in mind that they'd already paid for breakfast, the round of golf and dinner. I just hope that they're not allowed back. Just for 'fun' shall I go and total their goal posts, and see what they think of it?? (Obviously I wouldn't lower myself to their childish, chavish, immature behaviour).

My tale of woe:

Wifey not too well this morning. In bed for the day as she was certainly not 100%
Spent most of the day ferrying the kids up and down, making dinner and tea.
Add to that, bloody cold and windy, a big comp on at my club for the ladies. OK, I could have got a round in after the last round set off, but my domestic duties prevented that.

I just feel like I've done nowt today, a wasted day in my opinion. At least the Mrs feels a bit loved even though she's not too well.

Hope she's feeling better tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a round in then.

broke 80 for my first time yesterday, with a 9 under 79(par 70 course),think i could have been lower if i was strighter/longer with my driver,30 putts i'm seriously chuffed.i'm hoping my hangover will be cured(stayed up to watch the calzage fight) by abit of dinner and i can get out there later on.not going to bother ruining my confidence with a bad round if my hangover doesn't go and will wait till tommorow.

Interesting thread Homer, and one that all of us can empathise with. Sometimes it just seems the odds are against, and sometimes, we score better than we should with a lucky turn of events of two.
You can call me an optimist, but often when reviewing a round, I just give myself a break and look at the good things and "bank" a few thoughts as to how to avoid the cock-ups that spoiled a potentially good card. I might say something like "if I'd negotiated those holes with bogeys and hadn't hit such poor short shots on x and y holes, I'd have gone round in 80".
Holes 1 and 17 cost you dear this time; would you have taken two 4s at the beginning of the game? A par on both these holes is a big challenge and I'd be tempted to re-think the strategy and find better places to score a few more pars. The 1st is a treacherous green, and any shot just shy of the green and centre/just right should give you a chance at par and with a good chip/pitch ought to guarantee a bogey. On 17, it is a similar snakey green, just short and a chip to 5-12 foot ought to be good enough here also. Keep experimenting, and you might come up with some good plans for these holes.
Looking back on my performances of old, I made way too many 5s on long par 3s trying for pars; sometimes the aggressive play carries way too much risk. Keep the ship steady, play each hole as it comes, and sooner or later you'll crack your h'cap and have an easy scoring day.

I played conservatively yesterday with irons off the tee where appropriate but I fell short when using my woods from the tee, scoring mid 80's, which for me is rubbish, I hit my 5 wood 4 times off the tee and hooked 3 and pushed the 4th, each time earning me a double bogey.
When I used my driver I scored pars but stuck to the plan of using more lofted clubs off the teebox to see if it helped, unfortunately it didnt so its back to full steam ahead next week for the April Medal. Our greens have went from spongey to solid in the space of a week, the difference a week of no rain makes eh? So its gone from parkland target golf to the chip and run game which I had not practiced yet this year as the weather just hasnt been there to do it.
I did hit a couple of good irons into the greens which has kept me happy despite the overall result, one was a 160 yd bottom of the grip 5 iron into the wind using an open stance and ball well back in the stance, it never left the flag and stopped 8 feet from the hole, fast greens and a big turn meant it lipped out but happy that I can hit that kind of shot.
Roll on Next week.

Played the April Medal today - it was foggy!!! I give up with this weather...
Shot nett 77 - not good but not a disaster unlike my short game which I've left somewhere and can't seem to find.
New G10 driver going like a dream So if the short game reappears from under whichever rock its hiding things might look up a little.

Wifey feeling a bit better today. Still no golf, although I have booked an hour with my pro on course to iron out some defects and plan the way forward. Looking forward to it.

I just wish this damned weather would get better. Still wet and windy here. Not condusive to going out and swinging the clubs!

Gave yesterday a miss - just too wet and cold. Went out for some 'friendly practice' today with Mr. B. Can't say score of 100 was much good, but that included a disatrous melt-down (11 on a short par 4 - just don't ask, but water was involved!) In view of a week off and two recent lessons I'm not too unhappy. (Cutting the 11 to a still poor six would have made me 95 - 2 above handicap. also made some good recoveries after bad shots which are a bit inevitable at the moment
Best of all, Mr B. likes my swing and he's a hard man to please!)
Hoping to get to the range in the week so as to keep remembering the new action.

No woe for me. Just in from equalling my lowest ever score of 78, meaning a great score of 42 points in the weekly stableford. Could have and should have been a couple of shots lower after having one completely duffed chip on the 6th and my drive on the 18th going under a bush in the rough leaving me no option but to take an unplayable lie. So all is well in my golfing life and already looking forward to next weekend. :D

After three consecutive rubbish efforts, I can say I'm relieved to be having a mini-break with the stag trip to Brno this weekend.

It's been about 20% good shots, 30% OK and 50% bloody awful for the last month. Enough good to make me think there is nothing seriously wrong but enough rubbish to make me question myself every time I address the ball.

The good golf in February feels like a lifetime ago...
