What Stats, If Any, Do You Record From Your Rounds?

I can replay the whole round, shot by shot, at any time until I play again, and over write the data. I don't want to, but it is there in my head, along with other useless stuff I can't get rid of. No wonder I can't sleep.

That's me! My head is so full of BLOX that there is no room for the good stuff (like remembering birthdays)

The thing with SS2 is that you can print a scorecard size reference card and all you have to do is tick if you hit the fairway (or cirlcle the left/right arrow for which side you missed), tick the GIR column (or mark if you were short, long, left/right or there is an X if you can't get to the green in regulation - had to chip out off the tee etc)

There is a tick/X for sand saves, you write the number of putts on the green, can record your driving distance and the number of penalty strokes per hole. It only takes about 10 seconds per hole and can easily been done when you are marking your card.

It seems that the initial outlay is steep compared to other sites but it is a one off hit and there is way more info avaialable to the user plus other features like recording practice sessions, lessons and results.

I don’t record anything, maybe I should, but I feel instinctively about the part of my round that’s been good bad or indifferent.

I can be putting really well and the stats would show that, but a couple of missed 5 footers will still make me work on my putting. Whereas a few drives that don’t make the fairway are of no concern as long as they are not wild. Greens in regulation is another point. As I don’t hit the ball all that far I know hitting some greens will be a problem before the off and that’s one of the reasons I work more on my short game.

I’m not a natural golfer, I’m a left hander who was forced to write with my right. I play golf right handed although I was going left handed when I first started. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am and the main thing I work on is my ball striking. If I feel good with that the rest of my game is on. Stats don’t tell you the enjoyment factor. I’m a sour faced get at the best of times but TBO if I’m hitting the ball well I’m still happy even if I don’t score. I’m not happy when I scramble a decent score when I’m not striking the ball that well. I get my enjoyment out of striking the ball more than anything.

I’m all for stats, I use them every day, and I’m sure scoresaver 2 is the dogs nads but golf to me is more than scoring and stats.

Incidentally, how do you go on about recording data from a medal? Carrying and marking a second card does not seem a user (or partner) friendly option.

Viscount. It's absolutely no problem. I just mark up a separate card while the others are teeing off.

You can of course use the SS2 printout of the card (you initially have to input the details which are saved for future use) but all I do is take an extra card out with me and mark against each hole for instance .... L R 2 for missed fairway left, missed green right, 2 putts. A P for a penalty and SS for sand save or more usually SX  A fairway hit or GIR gets a nice tick.

While I am more than likely going to get SS2, be careful as to what you read into the stats.

If you hit a lot of greens in regulation but your putting stats are bad, it may be down to leaving yourself in 3-putt territory - easy to knock up 40 putts if you are 40 feet away every time.

I played 13 holes yesterday and kept the stats.

2 fairways
2 greens
18 putts
5 over par gross (including a triple!)
On the form showed and the holes left I would have expected to go round in 7 over (77)

I didn't hit many fairways but always had a shot to the green which I didn't hit very often. The short game was going well and I was chipping well leaving a lot of short single putts.

Now you may say "work on your driving and approach play and you'll score better". I agree that those 2 elements could be better. But if I hit more greens in reg and leave myself 25 feet each time, I'm going to 2 putt most greens and maybe 3 putt a couple of times, leaving the putting stat worse and maybe the score.

The point I am making is that while stats are useful and will help you to see where you can improve, they can also mislead.
